Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, recently shared exciting news about the future of artificial intelligence. In a series of posts on the Threads platform, he described how Meta plans to build several massive superclusters (superclusters) to power its new superintelligence initiatives. All of this will take place under the banner of Superintelligence Labs, which will focus on groundbreaking research. Zuckerberg emphasized that the goal is to create a team filled with elite talent and provide it with unparalleled computing resources.
Details of the Prometheus and Hyperion Superclusters
To give you a better idea, a supercluster is a massive network of computing devices, such as thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs) connected into a single giant system that provides the enormous computing power needed to train and develop advanced AI models, often operating at gigawatt scale.
The first of these giant projects is called Prometheus. According to Zuckerberg, it is expected to launch in 2026 and reach a capacity of 1 GW. This is a major milestone because, according to a report by SemiAnalysis, Meta will be the first lab to bring a supercluster with a capacity of over 1 GW online. But that is not all—Meta is also building Hyperion, which is expected to gradually expand from 2 GW to 5 GW over several years. In addition, the company is planning multiple "titan" clusters. One of these complexes is expected to cover an area comparable to the size of Manhattan (approximately 59 km2), making it one of the largest AI infrastructure projects in the world. These superclusters will be located in Louisiana and Ohio, with Hyperion specifically situated in Louisiana.
Investment and Strategy
Zuckerberg is openly talking about massive investments—Meta plans to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into computing infrastructure. The goal is to achieve the highest ratio of computing power per researcher in the entire industry. This means that scientists at Superintelligence Labs will have access to tools that will enable them to push the boundaries of what is possible.
