Wikipedia Introduced a New AI Strategy: People Remain at the Center

The Wikimedia Foundation, the organization behind Wikipedia, announced a new strategy for using artificial intelligence at the end of April 2025. The main goal is to support editors and readers, not replace them. This strategy responds to the rapid development of generative AI and its growing influence on the creation and dissemination of information. According to the official statement by the Wikimedia Foundation, AI will primarily serve as a tool to make volunteers’ work easier. For example, artificial intelligence will help search for relevant sources, suggest edits, or detect vandalism. What is crucial, however, is that final decisions about content will always remain with people. “Our AI strategy puts people first,” the organization emphasizes. The Wikimedia Foundation also highlights the risks associated with generative AI, such as the spread of disinformation or the unintentional reinforcement of biases. Therefore, AI development and deployment will be carried out transparently and with an emphasis on openness. The editing community will have the opportunity to influence which tools are used and how.

According to The Verge, Wikipedia differs from other platforms in that generative AI will not automatically create new articles or edits. Instead, AI will serve as a support tool intended to improve the quality and reliability of the content. The Wikimedia Foundation is thus making it clear that the human factor remains crucial to Wikipedia even in an era of rapid artificial intelligence development.
