Xiaomi MiMo: A New Player in AI Betting on Openness and Cutting-Edge Inference

In recent years, the world of artificial intelligence (AI) has become a battleground for technology giants competing for supremacy in the field of large language models (LLMs). Chinese company Xiaomi has now fully joined this competition as well, introducing its first open-source model, called Xiaomi MiMo, in April 2025. This move shows how Chinese companies are striving for greater independence from Western technologies and innovating in areas that are crucial to the future of AI.

What Makes MiMo Different?

MiMo, whose name is short for “Mi Model,” was designed from the outset with a clear goal: to push the boundaries of language models’ inference capabilities. While most current LLMs focus on text generation and natural language understanding, MiMo emphasizes the ability to reason logically, solve mathematical problems, and program. These are precisely the areas where traditional models often run into limitations.

According to Xiaomi’s official announcement and a technical report published on GitHub, MiMo was trained on a vast amount of data – during three pre-training stages, the model processed a total of 25 trillion tokens, of which 200 billion tokens consisted of specially synthesized inference-focused data. This emphasis on the diversity and difficulty of the training data enabled the model to better understand and solve complex tasks that require more than just a superficial understanding of text.

Results That Surprised Even the Competition

One of the biggest surprises is that MiMo achieves top-tier results despite its relatively small number of parameters – 7 billion. In independent tests on public datasets for mathematical problems (AIME 24-25) and programming competitions (LiveCodeBench v5), it outperformed not only OpenAI’s closed o1-mini model, but also Alibaba’s significantly larger open-source QwQ-32B-Preview model. This shows that innovations in data and algorithms can be just as important as the size of the model itself. Another key element is the use of reinforcement learning (RL) during subsequent training. Xiaomi introduced several new techniques here, such as a Test Difficulty Driven Reward system and an Easy Data Re-Sampling strategy, which help stabilize and accelerate training. Thanks to the new Seamless Rollout framework, RL training was accelerated by more than twice compared with conventional methods.

Openness and Collaboration as the Way Forward

One of MiMo’s most distinctive features is its open-source nature. Xiaomi published four variants of the MiMo-7B model on the HuggingFace platform, allowing researchers, developers, and companies around the world to freely use, test, and further develop the model. This approach stands in sharp contrast to some Western competitors, which keep their most advanced models under lock and key. According to the South China Morning Post, this move is part of a broader strategy by Chinese technology companies seeking to reduce their dependence on foreign technologies and strengthen the domestic AI ecosystem. Xiaomi also plans to deeply integrate MiMo into its products – from smartphones and household appliances to electric vehicles.

MiMo in the Context of China’s AI Scene

Xiaomi’s entry into the world of large language models comes at a time when China’s AI market is developing rapidly and competition is intense. Alongside Xiaomi, giants such as Alibaba (Qwen), Baidu, and ByteDance, as well as start-ups like DeepSeek, are investing in their own models. Each of these companies is trying to find its own path to efficient and powerful AI capable of competing with Western leaders such as OpenAI and Google. According to Tech in Asia, MiMo is not only a technological project but also a strategic one. With this move, Xiaomi is showing that it is ready to invest in cutting-edge research and development and become one of the leaders in generative AI.

The Future: AGI Is Still a Long Way Off, but the Path Is Open

Although it may seem that 2025 is already the “second half” of the era of large language models, the Xiaomi team emphasizes that the path to artificial general intelligence (AGI) is still a long one. MiMo is only the first step for the newly established “Core Team for Large Models,” and Xiaomi plans to continue innovating, experimenting, and collaborating openly with the community. By publishing technical details and opening the model to the general public, Xiaomi is not only strengthening its position in the market but also contributing to the faster development of the entire field. MiMo is thus not just another language model, but a symbol of a new era of openness, innovation, and collaboration in AI.
