Stay at a Working Horse Ranch in Fort Worth? My Experience at SDP Buffalo Ranch and Buffalo Ranch Retreats

If you want to experience something truly unusual when visiting Dallas and Fort Worth and, instead of a traditional hotel, try staying overnight on a working family ranch, I have a clear recommendation for you – SDP Buffalo Ranch.

My daughter and I stayed there twice during our trip to Dallas. The first time, we arrived for the opening evening of our trip and stayed in The Studio. The second time, we returned here on the last day of our trip and stayed in The Guesthouse. And I have to say that both options pleasantly surprised us – the ranch operates at a world-class level, yet the family atmosphere remains. And that is exactly what I like most about the entire place.

What exactly is SDP Buffalo Ranch, and what does it do?

Before I get to the accommodations and horses, it is worth explaining what kind of place you are actually entering as a guest. This is not an ordinary “vacation ranch” for tourists – it is a working, top-tier breeding facility with decades of history and a global reach.

SDP Buffalo Ranch is located at 1790 FM 2871, Fort Worth, TX 76126. Its location is ideal – just 31 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), 12 miles from the historic Fort Worth Stockyards, and 9 miles from the famous Dickies Arena. So if you are planning to visit Fort Worth or Dallas for rodeos, horses, or simply classic Texas experiences, everything is literally “just a short distance from your room.”

What do they do here? In short, they raise, breed, and manage elite Western performance horses (especially American Quarter Horses for disciplines such as cutting and reining). They are:

a full-service USDA-certified equine reproduction facility,
home to approximately 30 world-class breeding stallions,
and they provide comprehensive services ranging from mare boarding and stallion management to embryo transfers and business consulting in the equine industry.

And here is something I found particularly interesting as an entrepreneur: owner Shane D. Plummer does not see it purely as “horse breeding.” He says they are primarily in the “people business” – the business of people and relationships, while horses are simply the product. That may sound harsh, but once you spend half a day at the ranch, you understand that this philosophy is what gives the place its purpose and professionalism. The ranch has branches and activities in Australia and Europe, sells breeding services across five continents, and Shane is regarded as one of the leading figures in the industry. In 2026, they even launched a new international program called the SDP Breeders Bonus – a multidisciplinary international prize structure that is virtually the first of its kind in the industry.

A brief history that I found interesting

This family's story began in 1973, when S. David and Debby Plummer decided to commit fully to the horse business – even though neither of them had grown up around horses. David was born in Japan, grew up in Hawaii in a military family, and was introduced to horses while visiting his grandparents in Idaho. In their own words, Debby was “a city girl who knew nothing about horses”. But they had courage, put together a plan, completed their studies (David wrote his thesis on the equine industry), and went for it.

They started modestly in West Bountiful, Utah, then moved to Bern, Idaho, and in 1982 relocated to Apple Valley, California, where their business – then called Viking Ranch – truly took off. Between 1988 and 1992, they were ranked number one in the nation for the number of winning racing Quarter Horses.

In 2008, their son Shane D. Plummer and his wife Jane took over the reins (and the ranch), moved the operation to Texas, and renamed it SDP Buffalo Ranch. Then the Great Recession struck, and according to Shane himself, their business was saved by the stallion Hydrive Cat – a legend who earned more than $416,000 and was inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame. Hydrive is now buried directly on the ranch, at its highest point behind the stables.

I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that Shane and Jane have five children and that the entire ranch is genuinely a family business – and that is exactly how it feels when you visit.

Buffalo Ranch Retreats – three accommodation options directly on the ranch

To allow regular guests to experience this atmosphere as well, they created Buffalo Ranch Retreats – the accommodation section of the property, where you can rent one of the homes directly on the ranch. There are three options available:

The Studio – the smallest option, ideal for a couple or small family
The Guesthouse – the larger option, for families or groups
The Cantina – the largest option, for family gatherings or weekends with friends

We tried the first two. We did not stay in The Cantina, but according to the website, it offers 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a pool table, a large patio fireplace, and space for up to 10 people, making it a better choice for a larger group or family reunion.

The Studio – small, cozy, and surprisingly practical

We spent our first night in The Studio, and I was immediately impressed by how beautifully and thoughtfully it had been designed. It is a smaller space, but it is furnished in exactly the classic ranch-style Western decor we had come to experience. Wood, warm colors, subtle Western touches, and everything was genuinely clean and carefully crafted.

The Studio's practical amenities include:

1 king-size bed plus a sofa bed, so it can comfortably accommodate a couple or a small family
1 full bathroom
a kitchenette with an oven, microwave, dishwasher, coffee maker, dishes, and a washer and dryer
TV, Wi-Fi, and board games
designated parking for 1 vehicle

The ranch is gated, and outside business hours you enter through the rear gate from West Ridge Road using your own access code. There are cameras throughout the property, so you feel completely safe.

The Guesthouse – larger and ideal for families

When we returned to the ranch for the second time, we chose The Guesthouse – and I must admit that we enjoyed this option even more. It is not a ranch in the backyard – the ranch is all around you.

The Guesthouse has:

4 bedrooms
2 bathrooms
a spacious living room and kitchen facilities
a front patio, where you can light a fire in the evening, roast marshmallows, and watch the cattle walk by
a fire pit and beautiful views of the property

In my opinion, it is the perfect choice for families or groups of friends – you have plenty of space and privacy while still being right in the middle of ranch life.

Both accommodations were truly beautiful, stylish down to the smallest detail, clean, and very comfortable. The difference between “going to sleep in a hotel” and “sleeping directly on a ranch, where you wake up in the morning to the sounds of horses and cattle” is enormous. And for children, the experience is even more powerful.

The reason we went there – horses for my daughter

My main reason for choosing this accommodation was simple: I wanted to give my daughter a truly extraordinary horseback-riding experience. She rides horses regularly at home, but I wanted her to try different horses, a different style, and a different environment from what she already knew back home.

SDP Buffalo Ranch has a large covered riding arena and many horses in its stables. My daughter rode twice during our stays and was given horses that were genuinely gentle and suitable for less experienced riders. I never felt as though they were trying to “put a child on anything with four legs.” They carefully selected horses according to the rider's skill level, and for my daughter, they got it absolutely right.

By the way, here is a nice little story. The day before our second stay at the ranch, my daughter bought new riding gear at Dennards's (a new outfit, accessories, boots, a helmet, and so on), and of course she needed to try everything out immediately right there on the ranch. So her first ride in her new gear took place here at SDP Buffalo Ranch. And I have to say, the photos turned out really well.

There is one more moment I would like to mention: the owner's daughter went on a trail ride with my daughter. It was my daughter's first proper ride outside an arena, and she enjoyed it immensely. It was exactly the kind of experience that made me choose this place – a kind, experienced companion, a calm horse, and the surrounding landscape, all set in the authentic Texas Western style that I love.

What else you can experience at the ranch

The ranch is not just about riding. Everything there is arranged and managed exceptionally well, and there are a surprising number of activities:

Feeding the ducks by the pond – an absolute highlight for my daughter
Visiting the cows – we went to see the cattle on a short “farm tour”
Fishing directly on the property
Guided tours of the ranch explaining what happens where and how the operation works
Retreats and residential programs for families and groups

And then, of course, there is the daily life of a working ranch, which you can watch right from the patio of your accommodation. Stallions being taken outside, mares, horse transportation, machinery, and cowboys at work – for children and adults unfamiliar with this world, it is a genuine experience.

A few practical things worth mentioning

Before wrapping up, it is worth mentioning a few things for anyone who might want to visit:

This is a working horse ranch. Heavy machinery and vehicles move around the property, and routine operations take place throughout the day. Guests must follow clear rules – do not interfere with operations and do not go anywhere beyond your accommodation without an escort. Safety comes first here.
The property is fenced and locked, and outside business hours you enter through the rear gate from West Ridge Road using a code provided to you.
There are security cameras throughout the ranch.
Parking is provided for one vehicle per accommodation. If you need more spaces, you must arrange this with the host in advance.
DFW Airport is 31 miles away, so I definitely recommend having a car – it also makes it easy to reach the Stockyards and downtown Fort Worth.

In conclusion – would I recommend it?

Absolutely and unequivocally yes.

If you are ever in Fort Worth or Dallas and want to stay somewhere that immerses you in authentic Texas, genuine Western style, and a relaxed family atmosphere, SDP Buffalo Ranch and its Buffalo Ranch Retreats are the obvious choice. It is not a traditional hotel, nor is it a themed tourist complex – it is a working family ranch that lets you enter its world.

What impressed me most was the combination of:

family – the Plummers are incredibly pleasant, welcoming, kind, and genuinely make you feel at home
professionalism – this is a top-tier international business, not staged folklore for photographs
experiences for children – feeding ducks, trail rides, horses, cows, stallions, and plenty of space
attention to detail in the accommodations – the Western style is clean, tasteful, and thoughtfully executed down to the very last detail
location – the Fort Worth Stockyards and Dickies Arena are both within easy reach

If you are traveling with children and want to create a memory they will cherish for many years, ideally well into adulthood, I recommend trying this particular place. We will definitely return someday – and not just because of the horses.
