Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Reflects on the Nature of AI Platforms

Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, published a detailed post on the social network X (formerly Twitter) in which he described what he believes constitutes a true artificial intelligence (AI) platform. To support his view, he used an idea from Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft. Nadella emphasized that in today’s era of rapid AI development, it is important for technologies to deliver greater benefits to those who use them than to the companies that create them. The post attracted attention, including a reaction from Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, who responded with the 🤦 emoji.

A Quote from Bill Gates

In the post, Nadella directly quoted Bill Gates: “A platform is when the economic value for everyone who uses it exceeds the value of the company that created it.” According to Nadella, this idea is even more important in the AI era, when many companies risk handing over too much of their own value to major technology platforms. Instead, they should focus on building their own AI-based capabilities. Nadella asked how every company could be helped to create its own artificial intelligence tools in order to remain competitive.

Nadella cited Microsoft’s partnership with OpenAI as a prime example of an approach that benefits both sides. “Our investment helped them scale; their research accelerated our own innovation,” he wrote. As a result, the two companies strengthened each other—improving their products and infrastructure. Nadella also described how Microsoft is working with other companies to build new infrastructure for AI. For example, the world’s first “AI superfactory,” recently announced by Microsoft and OpenAI, draws on experience from three generations of AI supercomputers. This collaboration took place in close cooperation with Nvidia.

Changes in the Industry

Nadella further explained that Microsoft has now incorporated chips from AMD, giving startups and large enterprises more options for training and running their AI models. In this way, the company is seeking to ensure that the infrastructure is accessible and flexible enough to meet different needs. According to Nadella, the success of the AI era will be measured not only by the value of technology companies, but above all by how it helps other industries in the real world.

Nadella provided specific examples of how AI could transform industry. In pharmaceuticals, for example, it could help bring a new therapy to market in one year instead of twelve. Similarly, it could bring benefits in areas such as healthcare, manufacturing, education, and agriculture. According to him, the key is for these sectors to see real gains rather than merely theoretical promises.

Warning Against Misguided Thinking

Nadella warned companies to avoid “zero-sum” thinking, in which one side gains at the expense of the other. Instead, he recommended protecting their own data and value so that partnerships do not become disadvantageous over time. He noted that the industry has an opportunity to ensure that the benefits of AI are distributed evenly and to learn from past waves of technology, in which some sectors, such as local media, were left behind.

Elon Musk responded to Nadella’s post with a simple facepalm emoji, suggesting possible disagreement or irony. This brief response drew further attention to the topic and sparked discussions among technology leaders about the future of AI.
