Samsung has announced an investment unprecedented in the history of chip manufacturing. The South Korean giant plans to spend more than $73 billion on the research and production of artificial intelligence semiconductors in 2026. This is the largest single investment in chips in the industry's history. What is Samsung aiming to achieve with this move?
Lucrative partnership with NVIDIA
The key battleground is HBM chips, without which today's AI world cannot function. And it is precisely in this area that Samsung has fallen slightly behind in recent years. The dominant position has been taken by rival company SK Hynix, which was long the primary supplier of HBM chips to Nvidia and thus secured the top spot in one of the most lucrative segments of the AI market.
However, Samsung Electronics has decided to step on the gas. In January, it began mass production of its sixth-generation HBM chips, namely HBM4, and at the recent Nvidia GTC 2026 conference, the company also unveiled an improved version of the HBM4E chip. During the event, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang even described his visit to the Samsung Electronics booth as a “great partnership.”
Samsung secures key partners in the AI world
Samsung is rapidly establishing itself as an indispensable manufacturer for the biggest players in the AI industry. Nvidia has also chosen Samsung to manufacture its new Grok 3 chip, an inference processor that will power the Vera Rubin AI accelerator. Jensen Huang personally confirmed this at the GTC 2026 conference and publicly thanked Samsung for managing production. The same platform will also use Samsung's HBM4 chips.
And Nvidia is not Samsung Electronics' only major client. Just two days earlier, Samsung signed a memorandum of cooperation with U.S. semiconductor manufacturer AMD. And according to The Economy, Samsung passed OpenAI's demanding technical certification process and secured a contract to supply HBM4 chips for its data centers.
Will Samsung beat the competition?
The more Samsung strengthens its position, the greater the pressure felt by its longtime rival SK Hynix. If Samsung follows through on its investment plans and continues to improve its competitiveness, it could lead to a fundamental reorganization of the entire AI chip supply chain, which has so far been dominated by SK Hynix. However, such a large investment is not without risk.
Big investment, big risks
For Samsung, this is more than just a business decision. It is a bet on survival in a new technological era. The $73 billion investment represents an increase of more than 128% compared with last year's spending. In short, Samsung plans to reinvest a large portion of its profits. The reward, however, could be a leading position in an industry that will define the entire global economy in the coming years.
