Sakana AI: Japan’s Best-Known AI Startup Secures Record Funding

Tokyo-based company Sakana AI is currently in talks with investors from the United States and Japan to raise $100 million at a valuation of $2.5 billion. This figure represents a 66% increase over its valuation in last year's funding round. Upon completion of this round, the company's valuation would reach $2.6 billion (approximately CZK 60.58 billion). Sakana AI is one of the best-known and now also one of the largest artificial intelligence companies in Japan.

CEO David Ha recently stated publicly that the company will achieve profitability within one year. Sakana AI develops artificial intelligence using technology that differs from the approaches taken by companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. This distinct development method is attracting the attention of investors who see potential in efficient and innovative solutions.

Progress in Partnerships and Expansion

In 2025, Sakana AI announced collaborations with several major Japanese financial institutions, where it is developing artificial intelligence-based solutions. These partnerships are helping the company expand its influence in the domestic market. The company was founded by former Google researchers David Ha and Llion Jones, who brought experience in developing energy-efficient, nature-inspired artificial intelligence models.

Sakana AI has previously secured significant investments. In January 2024, it closed a $30 million seed round, followed by a $214 million Series A round in September 2024. These funds helped build the foundation for its current growth.

Plans for Using the New Funds

The new funding is intended to expand the team, particularly in engineering, sales, and distribution. Sakana AI currently has around 70 employees and plans to increase this number to support its growth. The company focuses on developing nature-inspired artificial intelligence models, which sets it apart from competitors and attracts interest from partners such as Nvidia.

According to sources familiar with the situation, talks regarding this funding round are ongoing but have not yet been officially confirmed. Sakana AI is thus continuing to build its position as a Japanese rival to global artificial intelligence giants, with an emphasis on innovation and rapid progress.
