OnlyFans model exposes Reddit scam using AI face-swapping with her photos
A recent case of artificial intelligence misuse reveals a new level of digital scams threatening content creators on platforms like OnlyFans. A British model known by the nickname Bunni discovered that her photographs had been stolen and manipulated using deepfake technology, creating a completely fake identity named "Sofía"—allegedly a 19-year-old girl from Spain.
What technology was used?
The scammer used advanced tools for creating deepfake content to place a computer-generated face onto model Bunni's body in her photographs. He subsequently shared these manipulated images on various Reddit forums under the aforementioned fake identity. The posts included both innocent content such as fashion advice and photographs of pets, as well as explicit materials shared in adult subreddits. Although direct links to an OnlyFans account were not publicly included in the posts, Bunni suspects that the scammer's intention was to lure users into private messages, where financial scams or subscription offers could take place. "I've always seen people stealing my pictures," Bunni told Futurism, "but this was completely different." The model explained that she is already used to people sharing her content without permission or passing it off as their own, but this new form of abuse, in which someone impersonates another person using her body and an AI-generated face, represents a much more complex problem. "It's face-swapping technology," Bunni described the situation, after discovering that the scammer had used her real body and replaced only her face.
How can this be resolved?
When Bunni found these manipulated photographs, she contacted Reddit moderators, who helped her remove the fake profile. However, she emphasized that legal action against such scams is often costly and ineffective given rapidly evolving technologies and inadequate legislation in the area of digital identity. Content theft is a common problem among creators in the adult entertainment industry, but the new wave of deepfake impersonations is more sophisticated and much harder to detect. This incident is part of a trend in which scammers use artificial intelligence tools not only for entertainment, but also to create convincing virtual identities or catfishing scams. These methods allow scammers to generate hyperrealistic people by combining real bodies with synthetic faces and flood social media with fake accounts that are difficult for ordinary users and the platforms themselves to identify as fraudulent.
Model Bunni expressed concern about how easy it has become for scammers to use generative AI tools, such as face-swapping software, to create convincing forgeries on a large scale before they are detected or removed. The rise in similar incidents highlights several challenges, including privacy risks, whereby creators' appearances can be exploited without their consent, gaps in legislation that are failing to keep pace with rapidly evolving generative technologies, and ethical issues related to the ease of creating "virtual influencers," which blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction in the online space.
