Meta Strengthens Its Ranks: Poaches Four More Researchers from OpenAI with Lucrative Offers

Meta recently hired four more researchers from OpenAI, bringing the total number of OpenAI employees who moved to Meta in 2024 to at least eight. The latest additions are Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren. These experts join previously announced hires, including Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai from OpenAI's Zurich office, as well as influential researcher Trapit Bansal.

Motivation Behind the Massive Hiring Drive

This hiring wave is part of Meta's intensive efforts to strengthen its artificial intelligence research capabilities, particularly following the launch of the Llama 4 AI models, which reportedly failed to meet internal expectations. The aggressive recruitment campaign included offers of signing bonuses reportedly as high as $100 million (approximately CZK 2.3 billion) for top AI talent from OpenAI.

OpenAI's Response

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, publicly commented on Meta's attempts to poach its employees, confirming the lucrative offers and ongoing competition between the two companies. This battle for talent reflects the intense rivalry in artificial intelligence among technology giants.
