Meta, OpenAI, and Palantir Contribute Their Best Minds to Military Innovation

Four prominent executives from some of the world's largest technology companies recently accepted the rank of lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army's reserve innovation corps. Andrew Bosworth, chief technology officer at Meta, known as "Boz"; Shyam Sankar of Palantir; Kevin Weil, chief product officer at OpenAI; and Bob McGrew, former chief research officer at OpenAI, were officially inducted during a ceremony in June 2025. All of these executives will advise on Army modernization in their spare time, with their appointments being personal rather than corporate engagements.

Andrew Bosworth brings extensive leadership experience from Meta, where he was behind the development of key Facebook features, including News Feed, Groups, and Messaging systems. As Meta's chief technology officer, he oversees the company's investments in artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, and wearable technology. He previously led Meta's Reality Labs, where he managed the development of Oculus VR and AR technologies. Shyam Sankar of Palantir brings deep experience in deploying advanced analytics tools and artificial intelligence for government and defense clients. His expertise in integrating cutting-edge software and data solutions will be crucial to the Army's modernization efforts.

OpenAI Delegates Its Product and Research Leaders

Kevin Weil, OpenAI's chief product officer, is known for his leadership in developing large-scale AI-powered consumer and enterprise products. His role in the innovation corps will focus on advising the Army on AI productization and scaling innovation across military systems. Bob McGrew, a senior OpenAI executive responsible for research, is recognized for his contributions to artificial intelligence research and its real-world deployment. Together, these two key figures from OpenAI will help the Army leverage state-of-the-art machine learning for defense applications.

Their appointments reflect the Army's growing recognition that rapid innovation requires close collaboration with private-sector pioneers, particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence and computing technology. The Executive Innovation Corps aims to enhance the Army's technological modernization with expertise from leading Silicon Valley technologists.

Deepening Collaboration Between Technology and Defense

These announcements follow deepening ties among technology companies, the U.S. government, and the military. Over the past year, OpenAI and defense technology startup Anduril announced that they would jointly develop artificial intelligence software for U.S. counter-drone systems to improve their ability to detect and respond to aerial threats. Around the same time, Meta announced that it would allow U.S. government agencies and contractors working on defense and national security to use its artificial intelligence models for military purposes.

These executives will serve as technical advisors focused on integrating artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented and virtual reality, and advanced analytics tools into future Army systems. Their mission will be to assist the Army with modernization and technological upgrades, drawing on their extensive experience in building and scaling transformative technologies in the private sector.
