Meta Will Create Ads Exclusively Using AI Starting in 2026
Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, has unveiled ambitious plans to fully automate the advertising process using artificial intelligence. By the end of 2026, all ads on these platforms are expected to be created and targeted exclusively using AI, representing a major shift across the digital marketing industry. And not all major players are happy about this change.
Automated Ads
According to information from The Wall Street Journal cited by Reuters, Meta plans to allow companies to upload just a product photo, set a budget, and let artificial intelligence handle all the remaining work. The system will automatically create visual content, write ad copy, and select the most suitable target audiences. Zuckerberg describes this approach as "a complete rethinking of how advertising works." Currently, brands can use only a few AI tools to modify existing ads through Advantage+ services, but Meta wants to go much further. The new system will be able to create ads from scratch and customize them in real time based on who sees them and where. For example, one user might see a snowy mountain landscape, while another sees a car driving through a city—all based on geographic location and other factors.
Reasons and Financial Incentives
This initiative is of enormous strategic importance to Meta because ads accounted for more than 97 percent of the company's total revenue in 2024. These profits then fund the company's massive investments in artificial intelligence. In April 2025, Meta announced plans to increase capital expenditure to $64–72 billion specifically to expand its AI capabilities. According to Zuckerberg, the goal is simple: a business tells Meta what it wants to achieve and how much it is willing to spend, and artificial intelligence handles the rest. This approach should be especially beneficial for smaller brands that have limited resources and lack large creative teams. AI-generated ads offer them a shortcut to professional-looking campaigns.
Industry Skepticism
However, not everyone is enthusiastic about these plans. Larger brands have expressed concerns about giving Meta even more control over their advertising campaigns. They also fear that AI-created ads will not look as polished as those made by human creatives. Although the technology is constantly improving, it is not always perfect—sometimes the results are chaotic, and fixing them takes additional time. In addition, Meta's tools require substantial computing power and customized AI models for each individual brand. This presents a technological challenge that the company must overcome to realize its ambitious plans.
Competitive Landscape
Meta is not the only company moving in this direction. Tools such as Midjourney and DALL·E are already being used to create digital ads, and Meta is exploring ways to integrate them into its platform. This competition is accelerating development across the industry and pushing all players to innovate. Plans for hyper-specialized targeting represent another important aspect of this transformation. Ads will be tailored not only based on geographic location but also according to how people view them and when they interact with them. This approach promises significantly greater advertising campaign efficiency and a better return on investment for advertisers. By 2026, we can therefore expect an entirely new era in digital advertising, in which artificial intelligence takes control of the entire process, from creation to targeting. With its plans, Meta is setting a new standard for the entire industry and demonstrating how AI can fundamentally change the way companies communicate with their customers.
