Google Subsidiary Launches Human Trials of AI-Developed Cancer Drug
Pharmaceutical company Isomorphic Labs, a subsidiary of Google's parent company Alphabet, is preparing to launch human clinical trials of its cancer drugs. These drugs were developed with the help of AlphaFold 3, an artificial intelligence (AI) system created in collaboration with Google DeepMind. The company, founded in 2021, is now preparing to administer the first doses to patients while also expanding its team, Isomorphic Labs President Colin Murdoch revealed in a recent interview with Fortune magazine.
What Does AlphaFold 3 Actually Do?
AlphaFold 3 is an advanced AI tool designed to predict complex protein structures and molecular interactions, which has helped Isomorphic Labs make significant progress in developing this drug. Cancer drugs are crucial in cancer treatment because they either destroy cancer cells or slow their growth, enabling further therapies. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million deaths related to the disease were recorded in 2022. Tools such as AlphaFold 3 have enormous potential for discovering new drugs for terminal illnesses such as cancer.
Funding and Future Plans
In March last year, Isomorphic Labs raised more than $600 million in a funding round led by Thrive Capital. The funds are being used to develop a next-generation AI drug development system and advance programs toward clinical trials. “This funding will accelerate the development of our next-generation drug development system, help advance our programs into clinical development, and is an important step toward our mission of one day solving all diseases with the help of AI,” said Demis Hassabis, CEO of both Isomorphic Labs and Google DeepMind.
Isomorphic Labs has entered into partnerships worth more than $3 billion with pharmaceutical giants such as Novartis and Eli Lilly. The company's goal is to create a cutting-edge drug design system that combines AI with human expertise to develop new drugs with higher success rates and lower costs for both manufacturers and consumers.
AI and Drug Discovery
With the rapid rise of AI, other biotech companies, such as Anima Biotech, Iktos, and Novo Nordisk, are also using the technology to operate more efficiently. Novo Nordisk, for example, signed a $2.76 billion agreement with Valo Health to apply AI to the drug discovery process. According to GlobalData statistics, more than 3,000 drugs have been developed or redesigned using AI technologies, with most still in the early stages and awaiting human clinical trials. Isomorphic Labs' upcoming trials could pave the way for further advances in the application of AI in biotechnology.
