Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic Invest Millions in AI Teacher Training
A major initiative bringing together leading technology companies and teachers' unions was announced in New York on Tuesday. The National Academy for AI Instruction aims to train 400,000 teachers from kindergarten through 12th grade in the use of artificial intelligence over the next five years. The $23 million project is supported by Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic, together with the national American Federation of Teachers and New York's United Federation of Teachers. The initiative includes developing a training program for teachers that will be available both online and at a physical campus in New York.
Schools, teachers, and parents are grappling with whether and how to introduce artificial intelligence into education. Teachers want to ensure that students know how to work with technology that is already transforming the job market, and they themselves can use artificial intelligence to automate tasks, allowing them to devote more time to interacting with students. At the same time, ethical and practical questions arise, such as where to draw the line between supporting learning and undermining it when students use artificial intelligence to help with homework or teachers use it to plan lessons or grade assignments.
Challenges in Education
Some schools have banned the use of artificial intelligence in classrooms, while others have embraced it. In New York, for example, the Department of Education banned the use of ChatGPT on school devices and networks in 2023, but reversed the decision several months later and established an artificial intelligence policy lab to explore its potential.
The new academy aims to create a national model for integrating artificial intelligence into teaching and school processes without increasing the administrative burden that often weighs on educators. According to a statement by American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten: “Artificial intelligence offers enormous potential, but also major challenges—and it is up to us, as teachers, to ensure that it serves students and society, not the other way around. The academy will be a place where teachers and school staff learn not only how artificial intelligence works, but also how to use it wisely, safely, and ethically.”
Program and Funding Details
The program includes workshops, online courses, and in-person training designed by artificial intelligence experts and educators. Instruction will begin in the fall. Microsoft will invest $12.5 million in the effort over the next five years, while OpenAI will contribute $10 million, of which $2 million will be in the form of in-kind resources, such as access to computing capacity. Anthropic plans to invest $500,000 in the first year and possibly more in the future.
The academy focuses on practical classroom applications, with an emphasis on equity and strengthening teachers' roles. It will offer workshops, online courses, hands-on training, and professional development, including continuing education credits, certificates, and priority access to artificial intelligence tools. The focus will be on high-need school districts to ensure equitable access to resources. Teachers will learn the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, ethical use, student privacy protection, and preparation for an economy shaped by artificial intelligence.
Benefits for Companies
The technology companies involved in the project will receive feedback from teachers and potentially an opportunity to put their artificial intelligence tools into the hands of educators and students across the country. Similar partnerships have benefited companies in the past—for example, Google Chromebooks are widely used thanks to their popularity in schools.
According to Chris Lehane, OpenAI's head of global affairs, who spoke at the launch event in New York, the training will combine general information about how artificial intelligence systems work with specific instruction on tools from Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic. There is also potential to develop new artificial intelligence products in collaboration with teachers. Lehane said: “How do you ensure that, in the context of kindergarten through 12th grade, they equip children and students with the skills they will need to succeed in the intelligence age? And you cannot do that unless you put it directly in the hands of teachers.”
Long-Term Impact and Expansion
The academy is intended to serve as a national center for free artificial intelligence training and curriculum development, combining educators' expertise with the latest technologies. A flagship campus is planned to open in New York in the fall of 2025, followed by expansion to additional centers across the country. The focus on equity, accessibility, and measurable impact in primary and secondary education is intended to ensure that artificial intelligence strengthens teachers' role as the central element of instruction rather than replacing it. The program will be adjusted based on feedback from educators and real-world classroom experience, with the goal of training more than 400,000 teachers by 2030, representing roughly one in ten teachers in the country.
