Elon Musk promises Optimus robots will go on sale to the public by the end of 2027

Elon Musk announced Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos that Tesla plans to begin selling its Optimus humanoid robots to the general public by the end of 2027. This statement marks a significant milestone in consumer robotics and confirms the automaker's ambition to transform itself into a technology giant focused on artificial intelligence.

From factories to homes

Project Optimus, also known as Tesla Bot, has been in development for several years. It is a general-purpose humanoid robot that should be capable of assisting with both routine and complex tasks in industrial environments as well as in everyday life. According to Musk, some Optimus robot prototypes are already performing simple tasks directly in Tesla's factories.

"Humanoid robotics will advance very quickly. We have some Tesla Optimus robots performing simple tasks in the factory," Musk said during a discussion with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, who serves as interim co-chair of the World Economic Forum. "Probably later this year, by the end of this year, I think they will be able to handle more complex tasks while still being deployed in industrial environments."

Musk further clarified the timeline: "By the end of next year, I think we will be selling humanoid robots to the public. That will be when we are confident that they have very high reliability, very high safety, and a very broad range of functionality. Basically, you will be able to ask it to do anything you want."

Musk's vision for the future of robots

Musk has long believed that humanoid robots will eventually outnumber people on the planet. "I think everyone on Earth will have one and will want one," the Tesla CEO said. His vision includes robots that could watch children, care for pets, or help look after elderly parents. "Who wouldn't want a robot that, provided it is very safe, could watch your children and care for your pets? If you have elderly parents—many of my friends have said that it is very difficult to care for them," Musk explained. He also noted that elder care can be expensive due to the relatively smaller number of younger workers.

Although Musk has set an ambitious deadline, he himself admitted that the path to mass production will not be easy. On Tuesday, he responded on his social network X to a post about the production of the Cybercab robotaxi, noting that the initial production of both Cybercab and Optimus robots will face significant challenges.

"An important caveat: initial production is always very slow and follows an S-curve. The speed of the production ramp is inversely proportional to how many new parts and steps are required," Musk wrote. "For Cybercab and Optimus, almost everything is new, so the initial production rate will be agonizingly slow, but will eventually become insanely fast."

Technical obstacles and competition

Industry experts warn that scaling humanoid robots is technically complex, partly because of the lack of data needed to train the artificial intelligence models that control robot behavior. "For Optimus, the market needs credible proof of scalable production, a regulatory pathway, and preferably unit economics," said Ken Mahoney, CEO of Mahoney Asset Management, whose firm is a Tesla shareholder.

However, Musk is not the only one who believes in the transformative potential of personalized robots. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, recently predicted that humanoid robots will be "one of the largest industries ever." Competitors are also making progress—Hyundai is reportedly considering taking its humanoid robotics division, Boston Dynamics, public at a valuation of $28 billion (approximately 672 billion Czech korunas).

A bet on robotics and AI

Project Optimus reflects Tesla's broader strategic shift toward artificial intelligence and automation. Musk has publicly suggested in the past that he believes humanoid robots could ultimately be more valuable than Tesla's electric vehicle business and could serve in a wide range of roles—from factory assistants to general-purpose helpers in homes and workplaces.

This initiative is also connected to Tesla's other advanced technology projects, including robotaxi services and AI-powered systems, reinforcing the company's long-term vision of an artificial intelligence-driven future.

The market's reaction to Musk's announcement was positive, with Tesla shares rising amid investor optimism about the company's expanding technological footprint beyond electric vehicles. If Tesla meets Musk's planned timeline, Optimus could become one of the most anticipated consumer robotics products.

However, it should be kept in mind that Musk has a long and well-documented history of promising products long before they become a reality. There are also profound technological challenges that remain for humanoid robots, including fundamental issues such as hand functionality.

Nevertheless, it is clear that with Optimus, Tesla is heading toward a future in which robots could become a common part of our homes and workplaces. The question remains whether Elon Musk's vision will become a reality within the announced timeframe or whether we will have to wait longer for a robotic household assistant.
