AI Wars Continue: xAI Sues Former Engineer for Stealing Secrets
xAI, founded by Elon Musk, has filed a lawsuit against its former engineer Xuechen Li. He is accused of stealing trade secrets related to the Grok language model. According to available information, this happened just days before Li sold $7 million worth of xAI shares, approximately CZK 158 million, and subsequently resigned to join rival OpenAI. Li joined xAI in 2024 as one of its first 20 engineers and participated in the development and training of the Grok model. This is another example of the growing tensions among major players in artificial intelligence, where companies are competing for talent and technology.
Details of the Allegations
xAI claims that Xuechen Li stole cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies with capabilities superior to those in ChatGPT. Specifically, he allegedly downloaded confidential trade secrets onto his personal devices. According to the lawsuit, Li admitted to the theft during a meeting with the company on August 14, while attempting to cover his tracks by deleting logs and renaming files. The lawsuit describes how Li accepted an offer from OpenAI in July, with his start date scheduled for mid-August, and shortly thereafter sold his shares and left. xAI emphasizes that these technologies could save competitors, including OpenAI, billions in research and development costs and years of work.
xAI's Demands and Legal Action
In the lawsuit, xAI is seeking an injunction that would prevent Xuechen Li from working at OpenAI or any other competitor until the case is resolved. The company is also seeking financial compensation for damages. The lawsuit further demands that Li return all confidential materials and provide access to his personal devices and online storage accounts for data recovery.
Consequences
The move from xAI to OpenAI only deepens the tensions between Elon Musk and his former company, OpenAI. Compensation packages for top researchers reach as much as $250 million, approximately CZK 5.6 billion. The lawsuit is also attracting attention because Musk previously criticized intellectual property protections, which now appears contradictory. As of September 2025, no court ruling or settlement had been reached, and the case remains a key flashpoint in the battle for dominance in AI.
