xAI Brings Colossus 2 Online: The World’s Largest AI Training System

Imagine a supercomputer that consumes as much electricity as an entire major city during peak hours. That is the reality of Colossus 2 from xAI, led by Elon Musk. This system has just become operational, making it the world’s first gigawatt-scale artificial intelligence training cluster. Elon Musk announced this on the social network X, where he shared that Colossus 2 is now fully operational and will be expanded to 1.5 gigawatts in April. This means its power consumption exceeds even San Francisco’s peak electricity demand.

Colossus 2: What It Is and How It Works

Colossus 2 is the successor to the previous Colossus 1 system and is primarily used to train and improve xAI’s Grok large language model. Together, these two systems represent more than one million H100 GPU equivalents. This is an enormous amount of computing power, enabling complex artificial intelligence tasks to be processed faster than ever before. Elon Musk emphasized that Colossus 2 is the first cluster in the world to reach the gigawatt scale, and the planned upgrade to 1.5 gigawatts will take it even further. For comparison, a gigawatt is one billion watts—enough energy to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

The speed of construction is astonishing. Colossus 1 went from site preparation to full operation in 122 days. Colossus 2 has surpassed the 1-gigawatt threshold and is heading toward a total capacity of around 2 gigawatts. Users on X praised how xAI is outpacing competitors that are only planning similar projects for 2027.

Massive Funding

This success did not happen by chance. xAI recently closed an expanded Series E funding round worth CZK 460 billion, exceeding the original target of CZK 345 billion. The money came from various investors. Strategic partners such as NVIDIA and Cisco Investments continue to provide support to help build the world’s largest GPU clusters.

In an official announcement on its website, xAI stated that this funding will accelerate infrastructure development and the rapid development and deployment of AI products for billions of users. The money will also support research connected to the company’s primary goal: understanding the universe. This move builds on previous investments and strengthens advances in Grok, including massive expansions of computing capacity such as the supercluster in Memphis.

Advances in AI

In 2025, xAI achieved several milestones. In addition to building Colossus 1 and 2, the company launched the Grok 4 Series, Grok Voice, and Grok Imagine. Work on the next version, Grok 5, is already in full swing. In its statement, xAI mentioned that it is focused on launching new products for consumers and businesses that will harness the power of Grok, Colossus, and the X platform to transform everyday life, work, and entertainment.

In a post on X, Elon Musk emphasized that Colossus 2 is now operational and that the upgrade to 1.5 gigawatts will arrive in April. This gives xAI a huge advantage in the speed of AI development.
