CEO Thomas Dohmke Is Leaving GitHub: GitHub Under Microsoft's Wing
Thomas Dohmke, CEO of Microsoft-owned subsidiary GitHub, has announced that he is stepping down. He shared the news in a blog post, explaining that he plans to launch a new startup after leaving his role at the end of 2025. The move comes as GitHub becomes more deeply integrated into Microsoft's structure, and Dohmke emphasized that the company will continue its mission as part of the division led by Jay Parikh.
Dohmke spent the past ten years at Microsoft after the company acquired a developer tools app he had founded in 2015. In 2021, he was appointed head of GitHub following the departure of former CEO Nat Friedman. During his tenure, he oversaw the expansion of GitHub Copilot, an AI coding tool powered by OpenAI models that became one of Microsoft's best-selling AI products. The tool helps developers automate coding and improve their efficiency, contributing to GitHub's growing popularity among millions of users.
Reorganization at Microsoft
The resignation comes several months after a reorganization of Microsoft's senior leadership, when GitHub and other developer-focused divisions were placed under the supervision of Jay Parikh. The former Meta executive joined Microsoft earlier this year and is tasked with persuading customers to purchase more AI tools, including GitHub Copilot. Dohmke confirmed in the blog post that GitHub will continue to operate as part of this division, indicating closer alignment with Microsoft's overall artificial intelligence strategy.
This change means that GitHub will cease operating as a completely independent entity, as it had since Microsoft's acquisition in 2018. Rather than appointing a new CEO, GitHub's leadership responsibilities will be divided among existing Microsoft executives, underscoring the push for closer integration. Dohmke will remain in his position until the end of 2025 to help ensure a smooth transition, and he highlighted GitHub's strong position, with more than one billion repositories and forks and over 150 million developers.
