Pentagon Awards AI Contracts to xAI, Google, and Anthropic

The Pentagon has announced major contracts worth up to $200 million each for three leading artificial intelligence companies: Elon Musk-owned xAI, Google, and Anthropic. These contracts were awarded by the U.S. Department of Defense's Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) and are set to run for up to two years. The goal is to expand the use of advanced artificial intelligence in national security, with the companies helping to develop so-called agentic AI workflows (autonomous processes with decision-making capabilities), large language models, and other technologies for critical defense missions.

Each of these companies will collaborate with the Pentagon to integrate commercially available artificial intelligence solutions into military operations. Expected areas of application include intelligence analysis, logistics, data collection, campaign planning, and various enterprise information systems. Although the Pentagon did not specify the exact missions, it emphasized that the aim is to accelerate the adoption of advanced AI capabilities across both combat and support domains so that the U.S. can maintain its strategic technological advantage.

For example, following the announcement, xAI, which is known for its Grok chatbot, introduced a special version called "Grok for Government" designed for government use. This move underscores how the private sector is bringing innovation to defense. The contracts are part of the Pentagon's broader effort to scale autonomous AI across the entire system, which could transform how the military processes data and makes decisions in real time.
