OpenAI Signs $200 Million Contract with the Pentagon

OpenAI has received a $200 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to develop prototype advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. According to the official statement, the company will develop AI systems to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains. Focus on Cybersecurity

Although the Department of Defense did not specify details about how OpenAI will assist with "warfighting operations," the company's policy prohibits the use of its technologies to manufacture weapons. The work will primarily be performed in the National Capital Region and is expected to be completed in July 2026. An initial $1,999,998 was allocated from the fiscal year 2025 research, development, testing, and evaluation budget.

In December of the same year, it announced a partnership with defense technology startup Anduril to jointly develop AI systems for U.S. counter-drone systems. Other Defense Contracts from June 2025

The OpenAI contract is part of an extensive package of defense contracts announced on June 16, 2025. Among the most significant is a contract worth up to $2.18 billion awarded to Borsight Inc. of Ogden, Utah, for the T-6A avionics replacement program. This contract will include the replacement of avionics for T-6A aircraft and simulators, with work to be performed at several bases, including Randolph Air Force Base in Texas, Laughlin AFB in Texas, Vance AFB in Oklahoma, Columbus AFB in Mississippi, Sheppard AFB in Texas, and Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida.

The OpenAI contract sets a significant precedent for the use of commercial AI technologies in the defense sector.
