Google Loses Key Gemini Executives Amid Major AI Reorganization

Google is undergoing a significant reorganization of its Gemini chatbot team, which has led to the departure of several key executives. Amar Subramanya, who headed the engineering team for the Gemini chatbot, is leaving the company, according to information shared with teams during the reorganization announced last week. At the same time, Mat Velloso, who led the product team for Google DeepMind's AI developer platform, has also left Google. A Google spokesperson confirmed the departure of both executives.

As part of the reorganization, some teams that previously reported to Subramanya are being moved to the core generative AI group within Google DeepMind. These include teams focused on model training, data and evaluation infrastructure, compliance, and core infrastructure for the Gemini app. According to a spokesperson, Google is reorganizing the Gemini app team's structure in an effort to accelerate its development.

Although Gemini usage has grown dramatically over the past six months, reaching 35 million daily active users and 350 million monthly active users as of March, it still lags behind rival ChatGPT. This is confirmed by internal Google documents disclosed in court proceedings.

Back in April, Google replaced team leader Sissie Hsiao with Josh Woodward, who is responsible for AI products such as the NotebookLM research tool. Subramanya previously worked closely with Hsiao, suggesting deeper changes to Google's organizational structure around its AI initiatives.
