OpenAI Reaches Historic $10 Billion in Annual Revenue
OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT, reached a significant milestone in June 2025 when its annual recurring revenue hit $10 billion. This achievement represents a staggering 82% increase compared to approximately $5.5 billion the previous year. This rapid growth is primarily attributed to rising demand for the company's artificial intelligence products, particularly ChatGPT, which has become a deeply integrated tool for both consumers and businesses worldwide.
Key factors behind this success include more than 500 million weekly active users across all of OpenAI's AI tools. Even more importantly, the number of paying business customers rose to 3 million, up from the 2 million customers recorded in February 2025. This gain of one million new business customers in just a few months demonstrates the growing adoption of AI technologies in corporate environments. The reported revenue figures primarily include consumer products such as ChatGPT and business-focused offerings, but exclude licensing revenue from Microsoft and large one-off deals.
Despite this staggering revenue growth, OpenAI also faces high operating costs. The company reportedly lost around $5 billion in 2024 as it invested heavily in the infrastructure and talent needed to support its rapid growth. OpenAI's rapid rise underscores the escalating demand for practical AI solutions in both everyday life and corporate environments, demonstrating how quickly the artificial intelligence market is evolving and expanding.
