OpenAI Drama to Become a Film Starring Andrew Garfield

Renowned Italian director Luca Guadagnino, best known for films such as Challengers and the upcoming After the Hunt, has decided to venture into entirely new territory. After his planned DC Studios project titled Sgt. Rock was shelved, Guadagnino quickly shifted his focus to a completely different type of story—a film about artificial intelligence titled Artificial. This new project is backed by Amazon MGM Studios and promises to dramatize the real-life events that shook the technology world in 2023, specifically the controversial firing and subsequent swift reinstatement of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Familiar Names

The screenplay for Artificial was written by Simon Rich, best known for his work on Saturday Night Live, who will also serve as a producer. Rich has decided to approach the dramatic events surrounding OpenAI as a comedy with dramatic elements, an intriguing take on a subject that had serious real-world consequences for the entire artificial intelligence industry. David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of the production company Heyday Films have also joined the production team, while Jennifer Fox is in talks to participate as well. This strong production team suggests that Amazon MGM Studios is taking the project very seriously and investing substantial resources in it.

As for the cast, the names associated with the film are truly star-studded. Andrew Garfield, known for films such as The Amazing Spider-Man and, more recently, Tick, Tick... Boom!, is in talks to portray Sam Altman, the controversial CEO of OpenAI. Monica Barbaro and Yura Borisov are also being considered for key roles and, according to available information, are expected to portray Mira Murati and Ilya Sutskever, two key members of OpenAI's leadership who played crucial roles in the dramatic events of 2023. These figures became known to the wider public precisely because of the company's very public boardroom conflict.

Filming Begins

Filming is currently scheduled to begin as early as this summer, with locations including San Francisco, a symbolic hub of the technology industry, as well as Italy, likely due to Guadagnino's preferences and Italian roots. This fast-paced schedule suggests that the studio wants to capitalize on the topic's relevance and release the film while the events surrounding OpenAI are still fresh in the public consciousness. The film Artificial could thus become a kind of "The Social Network 2.0"—just as David Fincher's film dramatized the creation of Facebook, Guadagnino's film could capture dramatic moments in the development of artificial intelligence.

Artificial marks Guadagnino's third collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios. His previous film, Challengers, starring Zendaya, received a positive response from both critics and audiences, while the upcoming After the Hunt, set for release in October this year, has already generated considerable anticipation. The shift from a sports drama and thriller to the subject of artificial intelligence and technology giants demonstrates Guadagnino's versatility as a director and his ability to move between different genres. The film promises not only entertainment but also an in-depth look at the world of high technology, power struggles, and the personalities shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
