OpenAI Delays the Release of GPT-5: "It’s Harder Than We Thought"

OpenAI’s ambitious plans to release the next generation of its language model have encountered unexpected obstacles. The company officially announced that it must postpone the launch of the anticipated GPT-5.

More Difficult Challenges Than Expected

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, admitted that developing the next-generation model is running into technical challenges that are more complex than those of previous iterations. "It’s much harder than we originally expected," Altman said during an interview in which he confirmed for the first time that users would have to wait longer for GPT-5. According to internal sources familiar with the situation, OpenAI is primarily struggling with:

  • Difficulties scaling the computing power required for training.
  • More demanding optimization of the reliability and accuracy of outputs.
  • Specific challenges in the area of the model’s reasoning capabilities

When Will We See GPT-5?

"We only want to release a model that represents genuine progress," Altman explained. "We don’t want to rush the release just to keep pace with the competition." Although OpenAI has not announced a new release date, analysts estimate that we may see GPT-5 no earlier than the first half of next year. Until then, the company plans to continue improving the existing GPT-4 through updates and new features. For ordinary users and developers, this means they will have to postpone their expectations regarding the arrival of the new model’s capabilities somewhat. As it turns out, despite all the advances in artificial intelligence, developing truly advanced AI systems remains an exceptionally demanding challenge.
