OpenAI Acquires Statsig: Major $1.1 Billion Acquisition

OpenAI has just announced the acquisition of Statsig for $1.1 billion (CZK 24.86 billion). The deal is structured as a stock swap, with no premium over Statsig's most recent private valuation. Vijaye Raji, founder and CEO of Statsig, will become OpenAI's new CTO of Applications and will report to Fidji Simo, who leads the division. Statsig's employees will join OpenAI, but the company will continue to operate independently from its Seattle office. Completion of the acquisition is subject to regulatory approval.

What Does Statsig Do?

Statsig is an experimentation platform used by innovative companies around the world, including OpenAI. It focuses on A/B testing (variant testing), feature management, and real-time decision-making. The team led by Vijaye Raji founded Statsig with the belief that the best products are created through rapid experimentation, tight feedback loops, and data-driven decisions. The platform already plays a key role in how OpenAI releases and improves its products.

What Does This Mean for OpenAI?

This acquisition strengthens OpenAI's Applications division, which is responsible for bringing its research to hundreds of millions of people and businesses. Vijaye Raji will bring his experience building consumer and B2B products at scale, including a decade leading engineering teams at Meta. He will oversee product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, including infrastructure and integrity. Integrating Statsig will allow OpenAI to test and improve experiences for users and businesses more quickly, helping to create more reliable tools. According to Fidji Simo, this opens up new avenues for building safe applications that improve people's lives and increase the impact of businesses.

Statsig serves clients such as Atlassian, Notion, Brex, and Bloomberg. This acquisition continues the trend of OpenAI expanding its ecosystem, including recent partnerships such as the one with Oracle for 4.5 GW of data centers. Vijaye Raji himself said that he looks forward to applying his experience to OpenAI's mission of solving difficult problems reliably and in ways that benefit everyone.
