Meta Joins Forces with Midjourney: A Partnership That Will Strengthen Meta

On Friday, Meta Platforms and the startup Midjourney announced a new partnership that promises to advance artificial intelligence for image and video generation. According to a post on X by Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, Meta will license Midjourney's technology for its future models and products. The deal will enable Meta to integrate Midjourney's advanced tools into its platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, expanding creative possibilities for users and brands alike.

Alexandr Wang emphasized in the post: “Today, we are proud to announce a partnership with Midjourney to license its aesthetic technology for our future models and products, bringing beauty to billions.” This move comes as Meta actively seeks collaborations with other startups in the field of AI-generated video, according to reports from The Information. These companies include Runway, Pika, and Higgsfield, with which Meta is pursuing acquisitions, partnerships, or licensing agreements.

Partnership Details

The partnership includes licensing specific Midjourney models, such as the V7 image model and V1 video model, which enable content generation based on text prompts. Meta will thus gain access to aesthetically advanced technology that produces high-quality, visually distinctive content. This integration is intended to help Meta reduce its reliance on external tools such as Canva or DALL-E while lowering the cost of producing advertisements and content for brands.

The collaboration goes beyond licensing alone—it also includes technical cooperation between the research teams of both companies. This is part of Meta's strategy, which includes establishing Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) and making massive investments in AI talent and infrastructure. This shift from in-house development to partnerships follows internal tests that revealed the limitations of Meta's own models, such as the canceled Llama 4 Behemoth.

About the Midjourney Startup

Midjourney was founded in 2021 by David Holz and operates without external investors. The company generates revenue through subscriptions to its image and video generators, allowing it to maintain its independence. The company's advisors include Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub, who now leads AI products and applied research at Meta, according to Midjourney's website.

This funding model allows Midjourney to focus on innovation in generative artificial intelligence, attracting partners such as Meta. The partnership not only strengthens Meta's position in the competitive AI landscape but also opens the door to more accessible content creation for billions of users.

Impact on the Future

This agreement is a key step for Meta in the race for dominance in artificial intelligence. By integrating Midjourney's technology into its applications, Meta will make it easier to create sophisticated content, potentially reducing advertising costs and increasing user engagement. At the same time, it highlights the growing trend of collaboration between major technology giants and innovative startups that are jointly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the digital world.
