Haunted Places in Arlington

Hell's Gate gives you goosebumps. It is located in the same area of River Legacy Park, surrounded by many large trees and a kind of swampy terrain. It is said that captured Union spies were brought here during the Civil War and hanged. Some people claim to hear strange sounds and have even seen a red-haired general in a Confederate uniform. You can find Hell's Gate at the end of a trail in River Legacy Park, where two fence posts stand; these posts once formed a gate. It was supposedly through this gate that the soldiers were led before they were hanged.

Screaming Bridge or Death's Crossing at Trinity Boulevard and Greenbelt Road has its own story: One night, a group of young people was speeding along a country road outside the park and came to a narrow bridge over the Trinity River. They failed to notice an oncoming car, and the vehicles collided head-on, caught fire, and plunged into the river below. Everyone died. Today, the road is closed and the bridge is gone, but the site can still be reached on foot through the park. If you find the bridge, you will see dates of death carved into it, and according to legend, glowing tombstones appear in the water. At night, a thick fog may rise from the river, and you might even see the ghostly lights of approaching cars. Another, more recent story tells of the deaths of two women whose car was struck by a train as they tried to cross the tracks. Even today, when paranormal groups investigate the area, strange phenomena occur—from drops in temperature to orbs captured on film.

Six Flags Over Texas is located at 2201 Road to Six Flags in Arlington. In the Texas section of the park, the Kandy Kitchen candy store is said to be haunted by a girl named Amy or Annie. The park opened in 1961, and Kandy Kitchen is one of the original shops. To this day, it sells caramel apples and fudge that are hard to resist during a visit. According to the story, Amy/Annie drowned in Johnson's Creek and now haunts the candy store, which stands directly above the creek where it happened. She turns the lights on and off and opens and closes the curtains on the second floor of the building.

Crystal Canyon at 1000 Brown Boulevard in Arlington is another local haunted place you should not miss. According to the story, treasure is buried there, though most people deny it. Lieutenant Jacob Snively, who played a major role in this area, allegedly led an attack on a Mexican treasure wagon. The attack was successful, and the soldier and his men acquired enormous wealth. They took it to nearby Bird's Fort, also in Arlington, but the United States Army considered this improper and viewed it as piracy against the Mexican government. American troops pursued the officer and his band of robbers, so they buried the gold in the Crystal Canyon area. No one has found it, but some claim to hear footsteps and voices after dark. Perhaps they belong to Snively and his group, who are still guarding their hidden treasure.
