Google’s Massive Investment: CZK 351 Billion for AI Hub in India

Google announced an investment of approximately $15 billion in a new artificial intelligence (AI) hub in the city of Visakhapatnam in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. This amount will be spread over five years from 2026 to 2030 and represents Google’s largest investment in India to date. The hub will combine powerful AI infrastructure, data center capacity, new large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fiber-optic network, all in one location. The announcement was made at the Bharat AI Shakti event in New Delhi, which served as a precursor to the India-AI Impact Summit 2026.

This initiative aligns with the Indian government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, which aims to accelerate the expansion of AI-powered services. According to an analysis by Access Partnership commissioned by Google, the hub could generate at least $15 billion (approximately CZK 351 billion) in U.S. gross domestic product over five years through new economic activity resulting from increased cloud and AI adoption, as well as U.S. talent and resources involved in the hub’s development and operation. Google emphasizes that this will create substantial economic and social opportunities for both India and the United States.

Project infrastructure

The Visakhapatnam hub will include a purpose-built data center campus with gigawatt-scale capacity, helping to meet demand for digital services in India and around the world. It will be built in collaboration with leading partners such as AdaniConneX and Airtel and will use the same advanced infrastructure that Google relies on for products such as Search, Workspace, and YouTube. Once operational, it will join Google’s network of existing AI data centers across 12 countries. Its development will draw on technologies created at Google’s Indian research centers in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, including the design of critical software and hardware.

The investment also includes the construction of a new international subsea gateway, with several subsea cables landing in Visakhapatnam on India’s east coast. These cables will connect to Google’s existing network of more than two million miles of terrestrial and subsea cables. This will make Visakhapatnam a hub for AI and connectivity not only for India but also for the rest of the world. The gateway will provide route diversity compared with existing access points in Mumbai and Chennai, offer high-capacity, low-latency routes for faster experiences for Google users and customers, and strengthen the resilience of India’s digital backbone.

Energy aspects

Google operates some of the world’s most energy-efficient data centers and is committed to the responsible growth of its infrastructure. As part of this investment, it will work with local partners to deliver new transmission lines, clean energy generation, and energy storage systems in Andhra Pradesh. This will expand the portfolio of clean energy technologies contributing to India’s power grid. Google is building on its existing clean energy initiatives in India to ensure that the hub operates sustainably.

Reactions from key figures

Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Railways, Information and Broadcasting, and Electronics and Information Technology, thanked Google for announcing the $15 billion (CZK 351 billion) investment and noted that this digital infrastructure would significantly help achieve the goals of the India AI Mission. He emphasized the Prime Minister’s vision of using technology in every area of life and called on the industry to undertake large-scale reskilling of IT professionals, which Google has included in its agenda. He described AI services as a new category in the digital economy and looks forward to using the hub to support young people’s development in this field.

Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, described the investment as a new chapter in India’s digital transformation. He highlighted the pride of hosting India’s first gigawatt-scale data center and Google’s first AI hub in the country, demonstrating a shared commitment to innovation, AI adoption, and long-term support for businesses and startups in the state.

Operations at the hub are expected to begin in July 2028, with capacity gradually expanding beyond 1 gigawatt. The hub is intended to strengthen India’s role as a global leader in AI, democratize access to advanced tools, and create highly skilled jobs. Google plans to scale capacity to several gigawatts over time and integrate its own Tensor Processing Units for local AI processing. All of this will support services such as Google Search, YouTube, Gmail, and Google Ads, and the hub will serve not only India but also Asia and other parts of the world.
