According to New Google Cloud Research, 90% of Game Developers Are Integrating AI into Their Work
The gaming industry is undergoing a rapid transformation driven by artificial intelligence. According to new research from Google Cloud, presented at the devcom 2025 conference in Cologne, 90% of game developers are already actively using generative AI (artificial intelligence capable of creating content) in their workflows. This survey, conducted by The Harris Poll, included 615 developers from the United States, South Korea, Norway, Finland, and Sweden. The results show how AI not only makes work more efficient but also opens the door to new creative possibilities.
AI Accelerates Game Development Workflows
The research reveals that 95% of developers see AI as a tool that reduces repetitive tasks and allows them to focus on strategic and creative aspects. Specifically, 47% of respondents use AI for game testing and balancing, 45% for localization and translation, and 44% for code generation and scripting support. This means developers can move more quickly from routine work to innovation, which is crucial as game development costs rise and the market becomes saturated.
Additional findings from the research confirm that 97% of developers believe generative AI is fundamentally transforming the entire industry. For example, 94% report that AI is already driving innovation in their work. This is reflected in how developers experiment with new game mechanics (93%) or genres (92%). Jack Buser, Global Director for Games at Google Cloud, said: "AI is no longer a futuristic concept—it is a present-day reality that is driving innovation and changing how games are created and played."
Creative Innovation Through AI
AI is also becoming part of the core creative process. According to the survey, 36% of developers personally use AI for dynamic level design, animation, and dialogue writing. This leads to greater flexibility in creative exploration (36%) and experimentation with new gameplay and storytelling concepts (37%). The research also highlights the role of AI agents—software systems that perform tasks autonomously. Among developers who use them, 44% deploy them to optimize content tailored to a game's needs, 38% for dynamic gameplay balancing, 37% for procedural world generation, and the same proportion for automated content moderation.
This innovation also helps smaller studios. Nearly a third of developers (29%) believe AI levels the playing field between small independent teams and large established players. However, the research points to challenges such as the cost of AI integration (24%), the need for employee training (23%), and difficulties measuring the success of AI implementations (22%).
Changing Player Expectations and the Future of Games
AI affects not only developers but also players. As many as 89% of developers observe that AI is changing what players expect from games. Players want "more lifelike" and dynamic worlds (37%) and smarter, adaptive non-player characters (NPCs, 34%). Developers see opportunities in dynamic changes to game worlds based on gameplay (23%) or in NPCs that learn and adapt (23%). This is leading to the emergence of "living games"—dynamic, evolving, and personalized experiences supported by cloud platforms such as Google Cloud.
The research also reveals concerns about data ownership and intellectual property. 63% of developers are dealing with data ownership in AI applications, 35% with player data privacy, and 32% with uncertainty regarding the ownership of AI-generated content.
Recommendations for Implementing AI
Developers suggest practical steps for successfully integrating AI. 40% recommend starting with small pilot projects or tests before full deployment. Similar proportions emphasize aligning AI with the creative vision and goals (39%), providing employee training, and establishing clear criteria for evaluating success (38%). This advice helps overcome obstacles and maximize the benefits of AI.
This research, conducted online from June 20 to July 9, 2025, underscores that AI is essential for the gaming industry. With support from technologies such as Google Cloud, developers can create faster, more creatively, and with players in mind, opening the door to a new era of gaming experiences.
