ChatGPT Slows Down: Google Gemini Is Growing Three Times Faster, Reaching 750 Million Monthly Users

Google announced a significant milestone for its Gemini AI chatbot app during its fourth-quarter 2025 earnings presentation. The app has surpassed 750 million monthly active users, making Gemini one of the most prominent players in the artificial intelligence market.

Gemini Is Growing Faster Than Its Competitors

According to company data, Google's Gemini app had 650 million monthly active users in the previous quarter. This means it gained 100 million new users in just three months. By comparison, Meta AI reports approximately 500 million monthly users. Although Gemini is growing rapidly, it still trails its biggest competitor, OpenAI's ChatGPT, which had an estimated 810 million monthly active users at the end of 2025. However, the gap between the two platforms is gradually narrowing.

Data from analytics firm Sensor Tower shows an interesting trend. While ChatGPT grew by only 6% between August and November 2025, Google Gemini grew by 30% over the same period. These figures suggest that ChatGPT may be approaching market saturation. ChatGPT's global monthly active users increased by 180% year over year as of November 2025, while Gemini recorded growth of 170%. Although both figures are impressive, ChatGPT's growth rate has slowed significantly in recent months.

Gemini 3 Model as a Growth Catalyst

The recently revealed figure comes after the launch of Gemini 3, the company's most advanced model. Google claims it provides answers with an unprecedented level of depth and nuance. CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized that the introduction of Gemini 3 in AI Mode was a "positive driver" of the company's growth. Pichai also said: "The launch of Gemini 3 was a significant milestone, and we have great momentum. Our first-party models, such as Gemini, now process over 10 billion tokens per minute through the direct API used by our customers, and the Gemini app has grown to more than 750 million monthly active users."

Competitive Advantage Over Rivals

According to Sensor Tower, approximately twice as many U.S. Android users now use Gemini directly through the Android operating system compared with those using the standalone Gemini mobile app. This gives Google a competitive advantage in the global market, where Android dominates, because it means Gemini is not limited solely to a mobile app or web interface.

Challenges from Perplexity and Claude may also be affecting ChatGPT's position. Both competitors recorded triple-digit growth for their chatbots in 2025, with Perplexity growing 370% year over year and Claude growing 190%.

Gemini is also increasing its share of the overall AI chatbot market compared with all leading apps such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, Perplexity, and Grok. Over the past seven months (May–November 2025), Gemini increased its share of global monthly active users by three percentage points.

Gemini's growth is particularly remarkable given Alphabet's overall financial performance. The company surpassed $400 billion in annual revenue for the first time this quarter (approximately CZK 9.2 trillion). Google attributes this success to the expansion of its AI division, which has seen increased demand. Google recently introduced the latest generation of its TPU AI accelerator chip, called Ironwood, to compete with Nvidia.

Time Spent in the App

Gemini app users are also spending more time in the app. As of November, Gemini users spent 11 minutes per day in the app, an increase of 120% since March. This is likely due to the popularity of its Nano Banana image-generation model, which launched in September. By contrast, the daily time spent by ChatGPT users increased by only 6% over the same period. Moreover, the time spent by ChatGPT users in November fell by 10% compared with July.

While current data suggests that Google could be catching up with the market leader, much of its recent gains are linked to the success of the Nano Banana model. OpenAI could accelerate its growth again by releasing new products of its own if they have a similar impact.
