European AI Researcher Raises $13 Million to Develop Groundbreaking 3D Models
Matthias Niessner, one of Europe’s leading artificial intelligence researchers and a former co-founder of Synthesia, has just begun a new chapter in his career by founding the startup SpAItial. This emerging company aims to solve one of the biggest challenges in AI development today—creating powerful artificial intelligence models capable of generating interactive 3D environments based solely on text descriptions. To realize this ambitious vision, SpAItial has just raised $13 million in a seed funding round.
The investment round was led by Earlybird Venture Capital, with participation from Speedinvest and several prominent angel investors. While the company is still in the early stages of development and has so far only released a demo video showing the generation of 3D rooms from text descriptions, its technical potential and vision have already attracted significant investor attention. This attention is largely based on the founding team’s exceptional technical expertise and the ambitious vision they represent. SpAItial’s ambition is to build a “spatial foundation model” for 3D content, analogous to how image models such as DALL-E and Stable Diffusion revolutionized 2D media with their text-to-image capabilities. The company’s goal is to enable users, including game developers and designers, to generate large-scale, interactive 3D spaces simply by describing them in natural language. This approach has the potential to significantly lower the barriers to creating virtual worlds and perhaps even replace traditional CAD systems.
SpAItial’s founding team includes other leading artificial intelligence experts. Ricardo Martin-Brualla brings experience from Google, while David Novotny led the development of text-to-3D object generation at Meta. This combination of talent and experience from leading technology companies creates a strong foundation for realizing the company’s technically demanding vision. SpAItial’s current strategy focuses on assembling a world-class technical team, and the company plans to license its foundation model to developers. The company sees applications not only in the gaming industry but also in design and other fields where creating 3D content from text descriptions could provide significant benefits. SpAItial is thus positioning itself to compete with other 3D AI startups such as Odyssey and World Labs, prioritizing the quality and interactivity of its foundation model.
