Reed Hastings Joins Anthropic’s Board as a Pioneer of Responsible AI Development
Reed Hastings, founder and longtime CEO of Netflix, was appointed to the board of directors of Anthropic, one of the leading developers of advanced artificial intelligence systems, on May 28, 2025. The appointment was made by the company’s independent governing body known as the Long Term Benefit Trust (LTBT), a unique structure empowered to appoint and remove some members of Anthropic’s board.

Hastings brings to Anthropic a wealth of experience from more than 25 years at the helm of Netflix, which he transformed under his leadership from a small DVD rental company into a global entertainment giant. According to Buddy Shah, chair of Anthropic’s Long Term Benefit Trust, Hastings was selected for “his impressive leadership experience, deep philanthropic work, and commitment to addressing the societal challenges associated with artificial intelligence.” Shah added that Hastings is “uniquely qualified to guide Anthropic at this important moment in the development of artificial intelligence.” This assessment reflects not only Hastings’s management skills, but also his long-standing commitment to socially responsible technology.
Extensive Donations and Support
Hastings’s commitment to artificial intelligence and its societal impact has also been demonstrated through his recent philanthropic activities. He recently donated $50 million to Bowdoin College to establish a research initiative called AI and Humanity. This research program focuses on studying how artificial intelligence is transforming work, relationships, and education while developing ethical frameworks for its use. These areas of research closely align with Anthropic’s own research priorities, suggesting a natural fit between Hastings’s interests and the company’s mission. Hastings’s philanthropic activities extend far beyond artificial intelligence and technology. Over several decades, he has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to support networks of charter schools serving low-income communities in the United States. His commitment to education is also evident in his membership on the board of the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP), an extensive network of 275 schools focused on providing high-quality education to children from less privileged families. The international scope of Hastings’s philanthropy includes supporting East African farmers through the One Acre Fund in Kenya. This program focuses on increasing the productivity of small farms and improving living conditions in rural communities. In Rwanda, Hastings launched a program that heavily subsidizes internet access and introduced an initiative offering smartphones at significantly reduced prices, helping to bridge the digital divide in this East African country.
Hastings’s appointment comes within the context of Anthropic’s unique governance structure, which is built around the Long-Term Benefit Trust. The LTBT is an independent body composed of five members with no financial interest in the company and has growing authority to appoint and remove board members. This structure, combined with Anthropic’s status as a Public Benefit Corporation, is designed to align the company’s activities with its mission to develop and maintain advanced artificial intelligence for the long-term benefit of humanity. The announcement of Hastings’s arrival on the board coincides with several other significant developments at Anthropic. On May 22, 2025, the company activated AI Safety Level 3 Protections, representing an additional level of safeguards for advanced artificial intelligence systems. At the same time, the company introduced Claude 4, the latest version of its flagship AI assistant. The Anthropic Economic Advisory Council, an advisory board focused on the economic aspects of artificial intelligence development, was also established in April 2025.
