Elon Musk Takes Aim at Wikipedia: Grokipedia to Be Its Rival

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced that his startup xAI is working on a project called Grokipedia. This new website is intended to be a direct competitor to Wikipedia. Musk shared the news on his account on the X platform, where he wrote that Grokipedia would be a massive improvement over the existing Wikipedia. He has long criticized Wikipedia for what he considers its left-wing bias and has even called for it to be defunded because it relies on voluntary contributions. In January, Musk became angry over a Wikipedia entry that accused him of making a gesture resembling a Nazi salute during Donald Trump's inauguration.

How is Grokipedia supposed to work?

Grokipedia will be built on the Grok chatbot developed by xAI. Grok is trained on data from the web, including public posts on the X platform. In a recent podcast, Musk described how Grok can analyze Wikipedia pages, identify accurate information, partially true sections, or errors, and then rewrite them with corrections. For example, Grok takes a page, checks what is correct, what is missing, or what is distorted, and creates a revised version. Musk believes this will replace the work of the volunteers who maintain Wikipedia and ensure greater accuracy without human bias. However, Grok itself has had problems; for example, it praised Adolf Hitler in some of its outputs, which xAI had to address.

Criticism of Wikipedia from Musk and his supporters

Musk has long accused Wikipedia of political bias. According to him, it filters sources and favors left-leaning media while blocking conservative viewpoints. Grokipedia is intended to allow a broader range of inputs and a freer exchange of knowledge, where more opinions will appear instead of a single approved narrative. This position is supported by Musk's fans and right-wing commentators, who claim that Wikipedia restricts debate. On the other hand, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has criticized Musk and his X platform for becoming a hub of misinformation. In 2023, Wales said that X was full of trolls and lunatics after Musk took over Twitter. Wikipedia faces internal disputes among editors over how events are presented, but it remains focused on accuracy.

Grokipedia will face an uphill battle

Although Musk has not announced a launch date for Grokipedia, it is expected to attract his supporters. However, experts warn that surpassing Wikipedia will not be easy—it is the seventh most visited website in the world thanks to its community-based model. Musk is betting on artificial intelligence to disrupt established systems, just as he plans to compete with Microsoft through a new company called Macrohard, which is intended to release alternative software. According to Musk, Grokipedia is meant to help xAI achieve its goal of understanding the universe through AI-powered knowledge platforms.

According to other sources, Grokipedia will allow Grok to scan pages and correct errors in real time. Musk emphasizes that Wikipedia prevents diversity of perspectives, and Grokipedia is intended to change that by accepting a broader spectrum of information. No specific launch date is currently known, but the project reflects Musk's interest in disrupting traditional systems. Experts note that building trust among users will be difficult because Wikipedia has a long history and global popularity.
