Google DeepMind plans to open its first research laboratory focused on discovering new materials, such as those used in batteries or semiconductors. The facility will open in Britain next year and become a key part of a partnership with the British government. Alphabet Inc., Google's parent company, announced the partnership on Thursday. As part of the agreement, it will adapt several of its artificial intelligence models, including Gemini (an artificial intelligence model), to meet the needs of scientists, teachers, and public-sector employees in the country.
The laboratory will be fully automated and integrated with the Gemini model. It will primarily focus on developing new superconducting materials capable of transmitting electricity without any resistance. This means they could help address major energy challenges, such as creating advanced batteries, next-generation solar cells, or more efficient computer chips. Automation will make it possible to synthesize and characterize hundreds of materials every day, significantly reducing the time needed to find useful new materials.
Partnership with the British government
This partnership expands Google DeepMind's collaboration with the British government, specifically with the AI Security Institute. The goal is to accelerate progress in science, education, the modernization of public services, and the strengthening of national security. British scientists will receive priority access to DeepMind's artificial intelligence tools, such as AlphaGenome (a genomics tool), AlphaEvolve (an evolutionary algorithms tool), WeatherNext (a weather forecasting tool), and AI co-scientist (a collaborative artificial intelligence tool for science).
The company will work with the government and British scientists on artificial intelligence-assisted research focused on cheaper and greener energy sources, including fusion energy. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall signed the agreement and said the partnership could deliver cleaner energy, smarter public services, and new opportunities for communities across the country.
AI for public services and security
In the area of public services, the British government's AI Incubator team is testing Extract, a tool that uses Gemini to convert old planning documents into digital form. This process takes only 40 seconds per document, accelerating land-use planning decisions. DeepMind also plans to develop a version of Gemini tailored to the government that would automate routine tasks performed by civil servants.
To strengthen cybersecurity, DeepMind will provide tools such as Big Sleep (a tool for detecting unknown security vulnerabilities) and CodeMender (a code repair tool), which can rewrite existing code to eliminate weaknesses. These tools will help identify problems and automatically repair code, increasing resilience against cyber threats.
DeepMind will also focus on education: it will develop a version of Gemini designed for teachers, based on the national curriculum and tested for safe use in schools. The collaboration with the Security Institute includes foundational research to ensure that artificial intelligence remains safe and beneficial. This includes techniques for monitoring the chain of thought of artificial systems and the risks of socioaffective misalignment, in which artificial intelligence models may harm users, for example through manipulation or deception, even while following their programming.
