Claude AI Comes to Slack, Bringing a Smarter Workspace

Anthropic has just announced the integration of its AI model Claude with Slack, allowing users to work with artificial intelligence directly in their work environment. This new feature was released on October 1 and offers two main ways to use Claude: adding Claude directly to a Slack workspace or connecting Slack to Claude apps so that it can search for and reference relevant messages during conversations. This allows people to get help from Claude directly in Slack, for example when writing replies to important messages, preparing for meetings, or analyzing shared documents, all without having to switch between apps.

The integration means that Claude can draw context from documents, emails, and other connected tools, making everyday tasks easier. For example, in Slack, Claude searches only public and private channels that the user has access to. If someone asks Claude for help in a public thread, the AI first creates a private draft response so that the person can review, edit, or regenerate it before sharing it with the team. This ensures full control over the process.

How to use Claude in Slack

There are three specific ways to use Claude in Slack. The first is through direct messages: users can start a private conversation with @Claude for individual help with research, writing, or analysis. The second is the AI assistant panel: simply click the Claude icon in the AI assistant header in any channel, providing access to AI without disrupting ongoing discussions. The third option is participation in threads: by adding @Claude to any thread, the AI generates a draft response based on the context of the conversation, which the user can review before sharing.

This feature can, for example, summarize long threads, explain complex concepts, draft emails, documents, or proposals directly in Slack, and then share them. Claude also helps users prepare for meetings by analyzing documents and generating key points. For quick research, it provides immediate answers on topics such as industry trends, technical questions, or internal company information. It even assists with programming tasks such as debugging, optimization, or understanding code directly within conversations.

Connecting Slack to Claude

The next level of integration comes through the Slack connector for Claude, which allows the AI to search channels, direct messages, and shared files in a workspace to provide better answers and support research. This is useful for meeting preparation, when Claude gathers relevant discussions and documents and creates a summary with recent updates and decisions. It also helps with project coordination by collecting status updates from different channels, identifying issues, and summarizing progress.

When onboarding new team members, Claude reviews channel history, shared documents, and related email threads to help them quickly get up to speed on ongoing projects. It also supports documentation creation by formalizing team discussions and drawing context from conversations and related materials. This integration uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which allows AI agents to interact with Slack and other SaaS tools in real time for context-based automation.

The Claude integration in Slack follows the same security and privacy standards as a Claude user account. Workspace administrators control app approvals for the entire organization, while individual users authenticate with their existing Claude accounts. The AI accesses only the channels and conversations that the user is authorized to access and respects all existing Slack settings. Conversations in Slack are governed by the organization’s data retention policies and security rules.

How to get started

Claude in Slack is available immediately through the Slack Marketplace for teams on paid Slack plans. Workspace administrators must first approve the Claude app before individual users can sign in with their accounts. The Slack connector is available to Claude Team and Enterprise plan customers who have the Claude app installed in Slack. Administrators must enable the connector for their organization, and users can then set it up in the “Connectors” section of their Claude settings. This integration joins Claude’s other integrations with tools such as Notion, Canva, and Stripe, expanding its use in enterprise environments.|
