China Has Launched a Race to Develop Brain Chips. It Wants to Catch Up With Musk’s Neuralink

What sounded like science fiction until recently is now a reality. The development of brain chips is one of the most widely discussed areas of technology today. While Elon Musk’s American company Neuralink dominated this field until recently, China has now entered the race as well. And the speed at which it is making progress suggests that it may soon not only catch up with but also overtake the US.

Why Brain Chips Are Attracting So Much Interest

Brain-computer interfaces, known as BCIs, are devices that map thoughts and neural signals and convert them into commands for computers and electronic devices. Patients participating in clinical trials are people who have suffered injuries or paralysis, and the chips are intended to help them return to a full life. Using chips implanted in their brains or special sensor-equipped headsets, they can control a cursor or robotic arm or, for example, type text.

Although most clinical trials primarily involve patients with some type of disability, the potential of this technology extends much further. It could bring benefits across a wide range of fields, from healthcare and manufacturing to conventional consumer electronics.

Chinese Government Support Is Accelerating Development

America’s Neuralink carried out its first chip implants in 12 patients more than a year ago. However, this lead is beginning to disappear very quickly as Chinese start-ups embark on incredibly rapid development with full government support.

Undoubtedly, the most prominent Chinese company currently involved in brain chip development is StairMed Technology. It recently released a video in which a paraplegic patient plays a computer game using only his thoughts, assisted by a coin-sized chip implant. And similar successes are becoming increasingly common.

Massive government support is behind the rapid development and enormous progress of these Chinese technology projects. Beijing has stated that by 2030 it wants to establish 2–3 leading companies that will dominate the field—and it has not stopped at words. Larger regions are already building centers designed to connect laboratories, hospitals, and companies, thereby ensuring smooth development. The government is also responding to the new technologies by introducing new insurance coverage that will allow related procedures to be paid for through the public healthcare system.

In short, the government has decided to remove every obstacle in order not only to accelerate development but also to facilitate the transition from clinical trials to real-world use.

Rapid Growth and Major Ambitions

China’s BCI market is already worth approximately $450 million and is estimated to grow by 20% annually. Start-ups are already competing to develop better, more adaptable, and less invasive implants. And results are already emerging. StairMed, for example, says it has a device that is half the size of America’s Neuralink and contains extremely fine electrodes just one-hundredth the width of a human hair.

China Is Speeding Up, While the US Is Slowing Down

Although America’s Neuralink had an enormous head start, Chinese companies are beginning to close the gap quickly. Neuralink plans to serve 20 000 people per year by 2031, but it is encountering complex bureaucracy and reduced federal support, which has already fallen by 20%.

China, by contrast, is channeling ever more money into the field and is also trying to assist companies through simpler approval and testing processes. Experts believe that this could follow a similar scenario to electric vehicles or chips: although the US reached the first milestones earlier, China quickly took the lead.

The Brain as a Battlefield Between Two Giants

According to experts, brain chips could transform not only healthcare but also industry and other important sectors. Securing dominance in this field is therefore crucial. And while America had made an excellent start, Chinese start-ups that only recently set the wheels of development in motion are now catching up at breakneck speed.
