ChatGPT Surpasses 800 Million Users

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced during the DevDay conference in October 2025 that ChatGPT had reached 800 million weekly active users. This figure includes consumers, developers, businesses, and governments that use the tool. As recently as August 2025, the company expected to reach 700 million weekly active users, representing a rapid increase of 100 million in just two months. According to Altman, 4 million developers are now building applications with OpenAI, and the platform processes more than 6 billion tokens per minute through its API (application programming interface).

In August 2025, Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, shared on the X platform that the tool had reached 500 million weekly active users by the end of March that year. This represents fourfold growth compared with the previous year. Turley emphasized how people and teams use ChatGPT every day to learn, create, and solve complex problems. He thanked the team for making the tool more useful and fulfilling the mission of ensuring that artificial intelligence benefits everyone.

Success factor

ChatGPT's popularity grew particularly after the launch of an improved image generation feature in March 2025, powered by the GPT-4 model. Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, stated in April 2025 that more than 130 million users had created over 700 million images within several days of the feature's launch. This tool attracted new users and increased engagement among existing ones.

According to a report by Sensor Tower covering the first half of 2025, users spend an average of more than 12 days per month with ChatGPT, placing it just behind Google and X. The average time spent in the app is 16 minutes per day. In addition, the number of paying business users increased—from 3 million in June to 5 million in July 2025.

ChatGPT surpassed 800 million weekly active users in September and October, with the goal of reaching 1 billion by the end of the year. In February 2025, the tool had 400 million weekly active users, a figure that doubled by September. More than 122.5 million people use it daily, submitting 2.5 to 2.6 billion requests. The largest share of users comes from the United States (around 19%), followed by India, Brazil, Canada, and the United Kingdom. As many as 92% of Fortune 100 companies use ChatGPT.

Developers and businesses at the center of activity

At DevDay, Sam Altman emphasized that thanks to users, artificial intelligence has become a tool that people not only experiment with but also use to build every day. OpenAI is focusing on infrastructure and tools for developers to accelerate further adoption. In August, the company reported that ChatGPT was on track to reach 700 million weekly users, which was soon confirmed.

According to Altman, the new tools will enable the creation of interactive, adaptive, and personalized applications that users can converse with. OpenAI reached annual recurring revenue of $10 billion (CZK 230 billion) in June 2025, with plans for further expansion.

ChatGPT reached 100 million users within two months of its launch in November 2022, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. In 2025, it is focused on reaching 1 billion users by the end of the year, with an emphasis on developers and businesses. Altman thanked everyone contributing to making artificial intelligence serve everyday needs.
