Sam Altman: No Ads in ChatGPT Pulse, but What About the Future?

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said at the DevDay event in San Francisco that ChatGPT Pulse is his favorite new feature in a long time. This feature allows the chatbot to collect data from users' conversations and connected apps, such as calendars or email, and then process the information overnight. In the morning, the user receives a daily summary—such as a personalized workout, a language lesson, a news overview, or dining recommendations for a restaurant they plan to visit that evening.

OpenAI designed Pulse to become part of the daily routine of people who start their day with ChatGPT. They originally wanted to make the feature available to everyone, but due to its high demand for computing power, they limited it to Pro users only (currently priced at CZK 5,580). Altman mentioned that the team is discussing ads within the feature, but emphasized that there are currently no concrete plans.

A Cautious Approach to Advertising

Altman admitted that he likes Instagram ads because they feel relevant. He did not rule out the possibility of something similar appearing in Pulse if it provided value to users. OpenAI is taking a cautious approach to advertising to avoid compromising the experience. According to available information, ChatGPT now has 800 million weekly active users.

Features like Pulse are intended to help people with everyday matters, whether fitness plans or the latest news. OpenAI is gathering feedback to improve this new feature, which it launched recently. Altman said that if they find ways to add value, they may consider new elements, but for now everything remains ad-free.
