Anthropic Expands into India: New Office in Bengaluru

Anthropic, known for its Claude AI models, is accelerating its international expansion. It plans to open an office in India next year, specifically in Bengaluru, which will be its second location in Asia after Tokyo. This move comes as India ranks second only to the United States in Claude usage, primarily for technical tasks and programming, such as developing mobile interfaces or debugging web applications.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is visiting India this week to meet with public officials and corporate partners. According to a company blog post published last Wednesday, this will help deepen its commitments in the region. Dario emphasized that India is attractive because of its vast pool of technical talent and the government's efforts to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence reach all parts of society. The company sees alignment between the challenges India faces and its mission, including deploying artificial intelligence across different languages and contexts, as well as building frameworks for responsible governance.

Focus of the new office

The new Bengaluru office will focus on deploying artificial intelligence for social good in areas such as education, healthcare, and agriculture. Anthropic plans to support key industries through strategic partnerships with Indian businesses, nonprofits, and startups. This initiative could accelerate growth in India's export-oriented information technology sector.

According to the company's recent Economic Index report, India leads in the use of Claude for technical and programming tasks. Large Indian companies such as CRED rely on Claude for their core coding work. Use of Claude Code grew more than tenfold during the first three months after its launch in May, indicating the potential for significant acceleration in India's IT industry.

Language support and leadership

Anthropic is investing in improving Claude's capabilities in Indian languages. The model already supports major Indian languages and will soon deliver better performance in Hindi and others, including Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu. These improvements will strengthen adoption in the public sector and enable broader access to artificial intelligence across India.

Last month, the company hired Chris Ciauri, a former Google Cloud executive, to lead its international expansion. Anthropic Chief Commercial Officer Paul Smith noted that the expansion comes at a critical moment, as Indian businesses and startups seek trustworthy artificial intelligence models. These systems must combine high performance with safety and reliability to support important operations at scale.

Market competition

Anthropic is competing with rival OpenAI to sell to customers outside the United States. OpenAI already has offices in Tokyo, Singapore, and Seoul in the Asia-Pacific region and announced plans in August to open locations in Delhi and Sydney. This race underscores the growing demand for artificial intelligence in India, where more than 90% of workers use artificial intelligence tools, the highest rate in the world.

The company emphasizes that its presence in India is not only about access to talent, but also about contributing to the development of the country's artificial intelligence infrastructure and responsible practices.
