Amazon Launches New Agentic AI Group Within Its Research Center
In early June 2025, Amazon created a new group focused on agentic AI within its secretive research and development center, Lab126. This initiative aims to advance artificial intelligence by creating AI agents capable of performing complex, multi-step tasks and acting autonomously.
The Group's Main Focus
The new group is primarily focused on integrating agentic AI software into robots, enabling them to "hear, understand, and act on natural-language commands." This capability is intended to transform Amazon's robots from single-purpose machines into flexible, versatile automated workers. For example, robots will be able to unload trailers and retrieve parts that need repair based on spoken instructions, rather than being limited to a single repetitive function. The main emphasis is on "physical AI"—artificial intelligence that operates in the real world through robotic systems.
The creation of this group is seen as a step toward ensuring U.S. leadership in technological innovation, as agentic AI systems are expected to revolutionize both consumer and enterprise technologies. Through AWS AI, Amazon is also supporting broader agentic AI research by funding the development of open-source tools and research projects.
