OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has just signed a seven-year agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to purchase $38 billion worth of cloud services, equivalent to approximately CZK 874 billion. This agreement will give OpenAI extensive access to AWS infrastructure, including a large number of NVIDIA graphics processing units. Specifically, these are the GB200 and GB300 models, which are essential for training and operating large AI models. The full capacity is expected to be deployed by the end of 2026, with the option to extend into 2027 and beyond.
This agreement comes at a time when OpenAI has recently undergone restructuring. This eliminated the requirement for Microsoft to approve infrastructure purchases from third parties. As a result, OpenAI now has greater freedom in choosing its suppliers. According to available information, this means that OpenAI can expand its operations more quickly without unnecessary restrictions.
OpenAI's Plans for Massive Investment
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said that the company plans to spend $1.4 trillion, or about CZK 32.2 trillion, on AI infrastructure over the next decade. The goal is to build 30 gigawatts of computing capacity, which would be enough to power approximately 25 million U.S. households. This agreement with AWS is part of these ambitious plans, as it provides the resources needed for growth.
OpenAI is thus focusing on long-term development, in which access to advanced technologies plays a key role. The agreement includes not only hardware but also comprehensive cloud support that will help OpenAI meet growing computing power demands.
This agreement represents a major success for AWS, which was previously seen as lagging behind competitors such as Microsoft and Google in the AI cloud sector. Amazon's shares rose significantly following the announcement of the agreement. OpenAI is thus strengthening its position in the AI sector, while AWS is gaining a stable customer with enormous needs.
