OpenAI’s first hardware could be a portable AI speaker costing over CZK 6,000

For several months, OpenAI's first hardware product was discussed mainly in general terms. Now it is becoming something you can imagine on your nightstand. According to information from Bloomberg, it is expected to be a doughnut-shaped speaker that users will carry around the house and set down, for example, beside the bed or on the kitchen counter. It is reportedly about the size of a hockey puck and is expected to cost between 6,000 and 8,500 Czech crowns.

What the device is supposed to do

The original description, which appeared in July, referred to a screenless speaker capable of moving and described it as a physical embodiment of ChatGPT. The new details clarify this concept. Bloomberg writes that OpenAI expects the device to be used as an assistant throughout the day, much like people currently use ChatGPT's voice mode on the iPhone. The model in the device is supposed to be more advanced, although the sources did not specify exactly what that means. The device should gradually learn who it is speaking with.

Bloomberg's sources also mention separate movable components that are designed to move on their own and visually accompany responses to users. The moving elements are intended to give the device some personality. The company therefore does not want just another cylinder that lights up blue when you speak to it.

Specifications revealed so far

The technical picture is still a mosaic assembled from leaked fragments, but as a whole it looks like this. It is a smart speaker without a display, equipped with grilles for audio and microphones for conversation. The key difference from the HomePod is battery power, which will make it a fully portable device. It is also expected to include a camera that will provide ChatGPT with visual information.
In terms of materials, OpenAI is apparently targeting the premium segment. The device is expected to be made of high-quality metal and have a premium feel. LoveFrom, the studio founded by Jony Ive after he left Apple and with which OpenAI is collaborating on the entire project, is involved in its development.

When it will go on sale and how much it will cost

Bloomberg estimates that the product will be launched in 2027. AppleInsider, however, points out that there are no precise timelines for this or the company's other planned devices. It adds that the speaker is expected to launch an entirely new product line. Given that this is hardware featuring a battery, camera, motors, and a machined metal body, next year is indeed the earliest realistic timeframe. OpenAI has not yet officially announced a more precise date.
Three hundred to four hundred dollars is a lot for a voice-controlled speaker. Amazon offers its home devices at prices ranging from forty dollars for basic models to two hundred and forty dollars for the best-equipped ones. OpenAI would therefore position itself well above the existing competition. The risk is all the greater because this is a segment that has historically generated little profit. Smart speakers have generally not been profitable, and breaking into this market is difficult, with a high price doing nothing to help. There is, however, logic behind this move: a home device would integrate ChatGPT more deeply into users' everyday lives.

A dark cloud over the entire project

OpenAI's entry into the hardware business has not had a smooth start. Apple is suing the company over the alleged theft of trade secrets, which OpenAI denies. The lawsuit was filed on July 10, just four weeks before information about the speaker was leaked to the public. In response, OpenAI conducted an internal audit, according to sources, to determine how the company had handled Apple's intellectual property in connection with this product. AppleInsider, however, points out that such a short period cannot be enough to fully assess the technology in a product that is already approaching production. It also notes that similar assessments of Samsung smartphone designs in a previous dispute with Apple took several months.

Although sources claim that the device's design itself will refute any allegations, they also mention the use of high-quality metal and luxury materials. In its initial filing, Apple describes, among other things, the alleged theft of metal finishing processes. The speaker's different shape therefore does not in itself rule out the possibility of infringement. Jony Ive is not explicitly named in the lawsuit.
