New study shows that advanced AI systems can be significantly more persuasive than humans when they have access to personal data

Research process

An interesting contrast to these results is the finding that in scenarios where neither the AI nor the human debater had access to personal information about their opponent, GPT-4's persuasive abilities were roughly equal to those of humans. This difference strongly underscores the importance of personalized data for AI's effectiveness in persuasion and suggests that artificial intelligence's ability to process and use personal information is a key factor in its advantage over human communicators. The study was designed as a randomized controlled experiment with a rigorous methodology that included recruiting participants through crowdsourcing platforms.
