Palmer Luckey is an American technology entrepreneur and billionaire who rose to fame as the creator of the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. He later sold the VR headset to Facebook (now Meta). He is currently the co-founder of defense technology company Anduril Industries, which develops products for the defense industry. Luckey is one of the most influential figures in the technology world and has long remained at the forefront of innovation.
AI Will Transform Manufacturing Beyond Recognition
At the recent Founders Summit hosted by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), Luckey presented a bold vision for the future of manufacturing in a conversation with partner Chris Dixon. According to him, artificial intelligence will dramatically reduce manufacturing costs to the point where people will be able to buy a vehicle like a Ford F-150 for just $1,000 (approximately CZK 21,000). "I truly believe that within our lifetimes, you will be able to go and buy something like a Ford F-150 for $1,000," Luckey said. "The costs of extraction and processing will fall to nearly zero, and margins will shrink significantly. It's not that crazy."
The technology visionary goes even further in his predictions. According to him, vehicle manufacturing and recycling will become so inexpensive that people will be able to buy cars according to the season, much as they buy clothes today. "I bet you'll be able to recycle a car with 90% efficiency at the end of the season," Luckey said. "You'll say to yourself, 'What will my summer car be? Let's go to the mall, buy one, and try it out.'" According to him, this efficiency will also extend to construction, where inputs such as steel, wood, and energy will become cheaper.
The Anduril co-founder predicts that AI will upend the economics of manufacturing and adapt today's streamlined processes from areas such as clothing production to larger projects, such as building a car or a house. "I think you'll see the same level of automation that dominates the textile industry and agriculture begin to be applied to everything," Luckey said. "AI will make raw material extraction, processing, and manufacturing easier."
The Current State of AI in Manufacturing
Some manufacturing companies are already reporting higher returns on investment from implementing AI. The Rockwell Automation's 2025 State of Smart Manufacturing report found that generative AI or causal AI delivered the greatest return on investment for 15% of manufacturing companies last year. Many companies use the technology to address labor shortages, protect against cyber risks, and manage supply chains.
Nevertheless, AI in manufacturing processes is still far from reducing costs. The average vehicle price in the US reached a record $50,080 in 2025 (approximately CZK 1.25 million), according to vehicle valuation company Kelley Blue Book. Property prices also remain high, with median US home prices peaking in 2022 and remaining above $400,000 (approximately CZK 10 million) in recent years.
The Problem Is Not Technology, but Regulation
Luckey, however, argues that high prices are not caused by input materials. According to him, the main factor keeping prices high is government and regulation. "The components aren't expensive," Luckey insisted. "It's the transformation and regulation that have made them really expensive." For Luckey, the path to radical affordability depends less on new scientific discoveries and more on overcoming political obstacles. "That's what I mean when I say we don't need a technological breakthrough so much as we need to just do things," Luckey added. "The technology will catch up."
