Chinese company Unitree Robotics, based in Hangzhou in eastern China, has just announced its R1 humanoid, which sells for only $5,900, equivalent to roughly CZK 123,500. This price represents a dramatic drop compared to competing models and could spark a price war in the robotics market. According to available information, the model is currently intended primarily for individual developers and research teams, suggesting that it is being prepared for widespread practical use. Unitree Robotics is thus putting pressure on Western manufacturers such as Figure AI, whose robots cost around $50,000.

Specifications and Comparison with Other Models

The R1 humanoid is equipped with 26 joints that ensure smooth and dynamic movement. The company presents it as a "natural-born athlete" capable of demanding tasks such as performing rolls or quickly getting up from the ground. This ability can also be seen in the promotional video, where the R1 demonstrates its agility. The $5,900 price is significantly lower than that of the company's previous models—for example, the 130-centimeter-tall G1 humanoid started at $13,800, while the adult-sized flagship H1 model (180 cm) started at as much as $90,800. The R1 is therefore not only cheaper but also more compact, making it ideal for developers who want to test new applications without major investments.

Other related information from online sources shows that the similar G1 model is approximately 127 cm tall and weighs 35 kg. This model offers 23 to 43 degrees of freedom (DoF), with each leg providing 6 DoF, the waist 1 DoF, and each arm 5 DoF. The G1 is equipped with a 9,000 mAh battery that provides about two hours of operation, as well as sensors such as 3D cameras, LIDAR (laser radar) for navigation and environmental mapping, plus a four-microphone system for audio input. It has an eight-core processor for fast data processing and artificial intelligence. Connectivity includes WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2, with support for over-the-air (OTA) updates. The G1 also has a built-in 5W stereo speaker and a quick-swap battery system with localized air cooling. Compared with models such as the G1 or H1, the R1 is significantly more affordable, which could accelerate its deployment in industry. For example, G1 and H1 robots are currently participating in a pilot project by electric vehicle manufacturers Nio and Geely, where they perform repetitive and highly precise tasks on assembly lines. The high price of these models was previously an obstacle, but the R1 could enable similar applications to become more widespread. Western competitors, such as Figure AI's robots working at BMW's factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, cost around $50,000, which is ten times more than the R1.

Reviews of the related G1 model praise its artificial intelligence for balance and movement, which enables stable behavior in various environments. The G1 is smaller than competitors such as Tesla Optimus or Boston Dynamics Atlas, making it suitable for confined spaces. The hands on its higher-end versions feature force control and sensors for delicate tasks, surpassing many other humanoids. However, the base version of the G1 does not have these advanced hands, and overall, it may have a limited payload capacity compared with larger models. These findings from online sources suggest that the R1 could offer similar practicality, but with an emphasis on affordability for broader use.

The Future and Potential of the R1 Robot

At such a price, there is a possibility that humanoid robots could soon enter ordinary households. Instead of a second car, people could purchase an intelligent assistant. Unitree Robotics expects enormous potential, and if the price war continues, we could see major changes in the market. For now, the R1 is aimed at developers, but its capabilities—from athletic movements to potential industrial tasks—promise an exciting future. According to online discussions, people are looking forward to household robots but point out the need for better intelligence for everyday tasks such as gardening or housework. With the R1, this dream seems closer to reality than ever before.
