Perplexity Offers Publishers $42.5 Million

Perplexity, an artificial intelligence (AI) company, has introduced a revenue-sharing initiative that allocates $42.5 million (approximately CZK 956 million) to publishers whose content appears in AI search results. The program introduces a $5 monthly Comet Plus subscription (about CZK 112), from which publishers will receive 80% of the revenue. At the same time, Perplexity is facing legal disputes, including copyright infringement lawsuits from News Corp's Dow Jones and cease-and-desist orders from Forbes and Condé Nast. CEO Aravand Srinivas described Comet Plus as "the equivalent of Apple News+ for AI and people who consume content from the internet."

How Revenue Sharing Works

Publishers will earn money when their articles generate traffic through Perplexity's Comet browser, appear in searches, or are included in AI assistant tasks. Perplexity distributes all subscription revenue among publishers after deducting computing costs. Users with Pro and Max subscriptions will automatically have Comet Plus included in their existing plans. This model is based on actual content usage, meaning that publishers are compensated for clicks to their websites, citations in AI summaries, or an AI agent's access to their materials for tasks such as research or summarization. For example, if the Comet AI agent accesses an article to fulfill a user's request, the publisher receives a share of the revenue.

Background of the Legal Disputes

The program comes amid ongoing litigation. News Corp's Dow Jones has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit, while Forbes and Condé Nast have sent cease-and-desist orders over the unauthorized use of their content. These actions reflect tensions between AI companies and media organizations, which fear losing advertising revenue because AI summarizes content without requiring users to visit the original websites. Perplexity is seeking to address these issues through a transparent model in which 80% of Comet Plus revenue goes directly to publishers, while the company retains 20% to cover computing costs.

Funding and Distribution Details

The total fund of $42.5 million (about CZK 956 million) comes from Comet Plus subscription revenue, with the service costing $5 per month (approximately CZK 112). This fund is intended for publishers whose content is used by Perplexity's AI systems. The program is designed as a "pay per crawl" model, meaning that payouts are tied to the actual use of content by AI agents. For example, if the Comet AI agent visits a publisher's page to obtain information, this triggers compensation. Users on the higher-tier Pro and Max plans have Comet Plus included, expanding the revenue pool. Aravand Srinivas emphasized that this approach allows both AI and people to consume internet content in a way similar to Apple News+.

Impact on Publishers

This model is one of the first to recognize that content clicks come from AI agents as well as people. Publishers such as TIME and Fortune already participate in similar Perplexity programs, but details about new Comet Plus partners have not yet been fully disclosed. The program focuses on transparency to ensure that publishers receive a fair share for the use of their materials in AI searches and tasks. Although the economics of sharing revenue from a $5 subscription may result in only small amounts for some publishers, it represents a step toward addressing financial challenges in the AI era.
