OpenAI Is Developing Its Own AI-Powered Web Browser
OpenAI is preparing to launch its own AI-powered web browser, designed to directly challenge Google Chrome's dominance of the market. According to the latest information, the browser is expected to be released in the coming weeks and aims to significantly influence how users interact with the internet.
Built on Chromium
OpenAI's new browser will be built on Chromium technology—the same open-source core used by Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. This approach will provide users with performance, compatibility, and a basic user experience comparable to familiar browsers. The decision to build the browser on Chromium is tactical—it allows OpenAI to focus on AI innovation instead of creating an entirely new rendering engine. The company has hired two former Google vice presidents who were part of the original team that created Google Chrome.
Deep Integration of AI Agents
The main difference of the new browser lies in the deep integration of AI agents directly into the browser. The browser will include integration with Operator, OpenAI's AI agent, which will be able not only to answer queries but also to perform various tasks independently.
Key AI agent features include:
- Automated bookings and form filling
- Finding the best deals on flights and services
- Conversational web control—users will be able to submit complex requests through natural conversation
- Content automation and summarization—the AI will be able to summarize web pages and filter important information
Challenging Google's Monopoly
OpenAI is directly targeting Google Chrome users. The browser has a market share of more than two-thirds and is used by over three billion people. Chrome is a key pillar of Alphabet's advertising business, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of its revenue.
The browser is expected to be designed to keep some user interactions within a ChatGPT-like interface, instead of traditionally directing users to external websites. This approach could significantly threaten Google's advertising revenue, as AI agents may change how users consume web content.
OpenAI's Broader Strategy
The upcoming browser launch is part of OpenAI's broader plan to embed its services more deeply into users' personal and professional lives. The company, led by entrepreneur Sam Altman, has already announced its entry into the hardware segment—in May, it paid $6.5 billion to acquire io, an AI device startup founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive.
The browser will allow OpenAI to directly integrate its AI agent products into browsing, enabling users to have them perform tasks on their behalf through the websites they use.
Competition in the AI Browser Market
OpenAI is not the only company entering the AI browser space. Perplexity, which operates a popular AI search engine, has launched its own AI browser, Comet, with the ability to perform actions on behalf of users. Two other AI startups, The Browser Company and Brave, have also released AI-powered browsers capable of browsing and summarizing the internet.
