Musk's AI Grok Reports 64 Million Monthly Users – How Does It Compare to ChatGPT and Gemini?
Elon Musk's company xAI told its employees that its chatbot Grok has reached 64 million monthly users. The news was reported by TNYT on Thursday. AI is becoming an everyday part of life for millions of people, and Grok is trying to establish itself among the industry giants.
According to the report, xAI shared this figure internally this week. Grok, which is integrated with the X platform (formerly Twitter), saw rapid growth following the release of Grok 3, when it became available free of charge to all X users. Earlier estimates indicated 18 to 35 million monthly users in early and mid-2025, representing a significant increase to the current 64 million.
Comparison With the Competition: Where Does Grok Stand?
Looking at the numbers, Grok still lags behind the biggest players in the artificial intelligence market. OpenAI announced in August that its ChatGPT had 700 million weekly users, which translates to an estimated more than one billion monthly active users—over ten times more than Grok. The chatbot remains the leader thanks to its broad availability and popularity in everyday use.
Google, led by CEO Sundar Pichai, said in July that its Gemini app had reached 450 million monthly users. That is roughly seven times more than Grok, and Gemini is gaining ground thanks to its integration with the Google ecosystem, including search and mobile devices.
Other models, such as Mistral or Anthropic's Claude, do not have precise publicly available user figures for 2025. However, according to available data from industry reports, their user bases remain significantly smaller than those of ChatGPT or Gemini. Both systems are praised for their quality but have not achieved mass adoption on the same scale as the market leaders. Claude, for example, focuses more on specific professional tasks, which limits its broader popularity.
In addition, xAI has a much smaller enterprise business than OpenAI or Google, which affects its overall reach. While ChatGPT and Gemini serve both businesses and individuals, Grok remains focused primarily on individual users through the X platform.
Changes in xAI's Leadership
This summer, Elon Musk made several changes to xAI's leadership. According to The New York Times, some responsibilities were taken away from early employee Jimmy Ba, while co-founder Igor Babuschkin, who left the company in August, had all of his direct reports reassigned.
Instead, Musk promoted former Tesla and X employee Ross Nordeen and former Google researcher Tony Wu. They now oversee xAI's products. These changes are part of an effort to accelerate development and expand the company's influence in artificial intelligence.
