Meta Strengthens AI Voice Capabilities with Play AI Acquisition
Meta, a company known for its social networks and technologies, has just completed the acquisition of startup Play AI. This California-based startup specializes in advanced voice artificial intelligence (AI) and voice cloning technology, which enables the creation of hyper-realistic, human-like voices. According to confirmation from a Meta spokesperson and an internal memo, the entire Play AI team will join Meta as early as next week. This move is part of Meta's broader AI strategy, which focuses on improving conversational and generative audio technologies.
Details About Play AI's Technology
Play AI, founded in 2019, developed a platform that makes it possible to create and replicate voices in various languages, accents, and dialects. These voices sound natural and human, making them ideal for applications such as customer service or content creation. Before the acquisition, Play AI announced partnerships with Groq—for the Dialog model, which is at the forefront of voice AI—and Reality Defender, which focuses on combating voice deepfakes. Meta's internal memo describes Play AI's work on natural voices and easy-to-use voice creation tools as a perfect match for Meta's plans in areas such as Meta AI, AI Characters, wearable devices including Quest VR headsets and Ray-Ban smart glasses, as well as audio content creation.
Team Integration and Leadership
The entire Play AI team will report to Johan Schalkwyk, a renowned speech AI expert who recently joined Meta from Sesame AI Inc. The team will bring its expertise directly to Meta, strengthening development in generative audio. The financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but Bloomberg previously reported on ongoing negotiations between the two companies.
Meta's Major Investments
This acquisition is not an isolated move. Meta recently invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and is actively recruiting talent from competitors such as OpenAI and Google. Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang has joined Meta to lead a new group focused on superintelligence. Backed by prominent investors, Play AI is thus becoming a key component in Meta's effort to lead in AI, particularly in voice technologies for immersive digital experiences. With this acquisition, Meta is strengthening its position in the competitive AI landscape. Play AI has established itself in the market through realistic voice synthesis, which can be used in customer service and content creation.
