Meta Acquires Young AI Audio Specialist WaveForms
Meta, the company known for its social networks, recently announced the acquisition of WaveForms, a startup specializing in artificial intelligence for audio. The acquisition was completed for an undisclosed amount and is part of Meta's strategy to strengthen its new Superintelligence Labs unit. WaveForms was founded just eight months ago, in December 2024, and quickly attracted the attention of investors. According to available data, the startup most recently raised $40 million in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, valuing it at $160 million before the investment.
Details About the Startup and Its Founders
WaveForms focused on solving the so-called Turing test for speech, a method of measuring whether a listener can distinguish between a human voice and an artificially generated one. In addition, it developed a technology called Emotional General Intelligence, which focuses on understanding and managing individual self-awareness. The startup had approximately 14 employees, according to LinkedIn data, and its website was taken down following the acquisition.
Two of the startup's co-founders—Alexis Conneau and Coralie Lemaitre—have now joined Meta. Alexis Conneau is a former Meta and OpenAI researcher who helped create neural networks for GPT-4o's advanced voice mode. Coralie Lemaitre previously worked as an advertising strategist at Google. No information is currently available about the fate of the startup's chief technology officer, Kartikay Khandelwal, or about what will happen to the other employees. This is not Meta's first acquisition in the AI audio field—just a month ago, it acquired a similar startup, Play AI.
Strategic Importance for Meta
Meta views this acquisition as a key step toward strengthening its position in artificial intelligence, particularly in voice technologies capable of detecting and replicating emotions. The founders of WaveForms will join the new Superintelligence Labs division, which focuses on developing advanced voice systems with emotional sensitivity. Meta has also recently hired other key experts, such as Johan Schalkwyk, a former Google speech AI expert who became head of the voice team at Superintelligence Labs. Other notable hires include Daniel Gross from Safe Superintelligence, Ruoming Pang from Apple's foundation models team, and Nat Friedman, the former head of GitHub.
This series of acquisitions and hires is part of Meta's massive investment in generative artificial intelligence and audio capabilities. The company plans to spend between $66 billion and $72 billion on capital expenditures in 2025, largely on projects related to artificial intelligence. WaveForms' technology could be integrated into products such as Meta AI, Ray-Ban smart glasses, or digital assistants and avatars, where it could help create more human-like interactions with emotional depth.
Market Impact
The acquisition of WaveForms highlights the growing interest among major technology companies in artificial intelligence capable of understanding and expressing emotions. This could change the way we interact with digital devices, from voice assistants to content creation. Meta is seeking to keep pace with competitors in a rapidly developing sector that also includes OpenAI and Google. No financial details of the acquisition were disclosed, but the strategic focus is clear—Meta is investing in talent and technology to lead the field of emotionally intelligent audio systems.
