Hunyuan-T1: The New Chinese Artificial Intelligence Model That Surpasses GPT-4.5 and DeepSeek-R1.

In the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence, new and more powerful models are emerging almost every day. Just two months after the launch of DeepSeek-R1, Tencent is introducing a new language model, Hunyuan-T1, which not only reaches the level of DeepSeek-R1 but, according to initial tests, even surpasses OpenAI's GPT-4.5.

Technical Foundations and Innovations

Hunyuan-T1 is built on an advanced architecture combining several innovative approaches:

1. Hybrid architecture - The model uses the Mixture of Experts (MoE) framework enhanced with components of the Mamba architecture. Tencent describes this integration as the "lossless incorporation" of state-space models into large-scale AI systems.

2. Activation of 52 billion parameters - Through dynamic expert routing, in which each specialized module processes specific areas of reasoning, such as mathematical logic or contextual analysis.

3. Adaptive allocation of computational resources - Resources are dynamically shifted among 16 expert networks according to the complexity of the input.

4. Cross-Layer Attention (CLA) - Reduces GPU memory consumption by 50% in KV cache operations through hierarchical attention mechanisms.

5. FP8 quantization - Retains 99.3% of FP16 accuracy while doubling inference speed through optimized numerical representation.

Training Process and Data Foundation

The model was trained on 4.8 trillion tokens of multilingual data, with Chinese content accounting for 65% of the corpus. Key advances include:

256K context window - It can process documents the size of the novel War and Peace (587,287 words) in a single pass through hierarchical partitioning.
Synthetic data augmentation - 820 billion tokens of scenario-specific training pairs were generated to strengthen few-shot learning capabilities.
Specific learning rates for experts - Implements different learning rates ranging from 3e-5 to 1e-4 across expert modules to prevent knowledge loss.


Performance Advantages

Hunyuan-T1 excels in several key areas:

1. Outstanding reasoning capabilities - Built on TurboS with a Hybrid-Transformer-Mamba MoE architecture, it excels at deep logical and mathematical reasoning.

2. Optimization for long-text processing - It leverages TurboS's ability to capture long texts without losing context and improves the processing of long-term dependencies. The Mamba architecture increases the efficiency of processing long sequences while reducing computational costs.

3. Double decoding speed - Compared with previous models under the same deployment conditions.

4. Optimization through reinforcement learning - 96.7% of computational resources are devoted to reinforcement learning during post-training, focused on improving pure reasoning capabilities and ensuring alignment with human preferences.

5. Impressive generation speed - 60-80 tokens per second, surpassing GPT-4.5 and DeepSeek R1.

Performance Comparison with Competitors

In tests based on standardized benchmarks, Hunyuan-T1 surpasses the DeepSeek R1 and GPT-4.5 models in most, if not all, measured categories. This suggests that Hunyuan-T1 has superior capabilities in tasks involving language understanding, reasoning, and problem-solving.

In the expanded MMLU-PRO evaluation set, Hunyuan-T1 achieved a composite score of 87.2, ranking just behind the proprietary o1 model in complex reasoning tasks.

 

How to Access Hunyuan-T1

Through the Tencent Yuanbao platform:
1. Visit the Tencent Yuanbao platform, available as a mobile app, web version, or desktop application (supporting Windows and macOS as of March 1, 2025).

2. Register or log in using a Tencent account. A Chinese phone number may be required for registration because some features are region-specific.

3. After logging in, select Hunyuan-T1 from the available models. The platform allows users to switch between models such as Hunyuan-T1 (for deep reasoning) and Hunyuan Turbo S (for quick responses).

API access through Tencent Cloud:
1. Register for a Tencent Cloud account at www.tencentcloud.com.

2. Go to the AI or Machine Learning section and search for Hunyuan models.

3. Request API access to Hunyuan-T1. Tencent offers a free one-week trial, with pricing of approximately 0.8 yuan per million input tokens and 2 yuan per million output tokens (as of February 2025).

4. Integrate the API into your application using the provided documentation.

Limitations and Availability

Despite its technological advances, access to Hunyuan-T1 remains a challenge for users outside China. Unlike other Chinese models, such as DeepSeek and Kimi, which allow signing in through Google, the Tencent platform relies heavily on WeChat and requires a Chinese phone number for registration. This creates a barrier for international users and limits the model's global availability.

While Hunyuan-T1 is undoubtedly a promising innovation, its current design and accessibility appear to be primarily tailored to the Chinese market. If Tencent resolves these accessibility issues in the future, Hunyuan-T1 could become a more inclusive and widely used tool.

Hunyuan-T1 represents a significant advancement in the field of artificial intelligence and strengthens China's ambitions to win the AI race. With impressive technical specifications and performance that, according to benchmarks, surpasses even OpenAI's latest model, it confirms the growing technological maturity of Chinese AI companies. Although the model is primarily focused on the Chinese market and Chinese language, its technological innovations and approaches to solving complex problems will undoubtedly inspire further development throughout the artificial intelligence industry.

It remains to be seen whether and when this or similar models will become available to a global audience and how they will influence international competition in the field of AI.
